My horse hoof is a mess...big chunks breaking off and the shoe may part company taking more with it!!! Have left a message for farrier but not sure he will have anything left to put a shoe onto ones he takes this one off...if it does not come off in mud beforehand!
What the hell to do!?
Would a hoof boot or two help? Can I hack out on roads in these and are they alright for long term use...or do they prevent the hoof from breathing?
My main problem is he has to be ridden to keep weight off and it is all road work here...so not shoeing the backs is not an option unless the hoof is protected.
Pleeeeassee help and advise if possible.

Oh dear!

Could you keep him in until the farrier comes?

I think as a temporary solution boots would be the only thing to use.

Do you feed a hoof supplement? Made a big difference to my horse.

I have a similar problem with my horse, his feet were a mess and I could poke my finger through the hoof wall through the otherside and wiggle it around.

Farrier advised a hoof supplement (I used farriers and form 4 feet) and I took his shoes off for 9 months. I had broken ribs at the time and it was winter, but when the ground hardened up at bit, he had to have his shoes back on as he was very sore and touch wood, this seems to have done the trick.

it might be foot rot or seedy toe, to do with this poor excuse for a summer. i am using formalin and the purple spray for sheep. also farriers formula is about £28 pe 5 litres. your farrier will tell you.
as for the boots, i have equi boots which would just be used when you were riding. i bought 1 for when she had an abscess to give it protection when she eventually got back out in the field. they are good, best way to get right fit is to take a shoe to the tack shop and size it that way.

My TB had really bad feet and I bought some cheap Ezi-Groom hoof salve, put it on religiously twice a day for 3 weeks and his feet have made a miraculous recovery. I was amazed something so cheap and simple did the job! Might not work for everyone but did for me!
