Hello my mare was milking for a year, (only a little and it wasn't irritating her so the vet said unless they get hard or she is uncomfortable she will be fine) it was not the grass as she was on box rest for 2 months, she is an 8 year old cob cross and has never had a foal, I have had her since she was nearly 3 and the vet said by her womb and teats etc she has definitely not had one. 2 weeks ago she got very large around her teats and when I rode her she was walking strange so obviously I got off. I looked it up and she was 'bagging up' which is something they apparently do a month before they are due to give birth! Called the vet, she did some blood tests, her progesterone level was 26! She came down again. Scanned her overies and womb. No baby which we knew as there is no way she could be pregnant! We have no stallions at our livery and have little herds and only of the same sex, her ovaries were fine. ( was worried about growths or systs) she said she is having a phantom pregnancy. She really thinks she is pregnant! Her 2 eggs were outside of her ovaries, ready for her to come into season, but she thinks she is pregnant?! Anyway she gave her a hormone shot that will bring her into season in the next 3-5 days, I was not prepared for what I saw, she Was dripping with sweat and looked like she was having the only thing I can see is period pains in humans! The vet said that's exactly what it I feels like to her. So what I am wondering is. Does anyone know if this could of been going on since I got her? Me and my mum have never noticed her being in season since we got her, we just thought she was quiet. Also, if this has happened randomly once, do you think it will happen again? Because if it does we cannot put her threw that injection yearly! We will have to do it once more and put her into foal (I hear sometimes that's the only thing that can sort their hormones out) if she wasnt uncomfortable I would leave her, but the vet did say it won't be nice for her if her hormones keep going up and down! Thanks sorry this is so long! X

My mare had a phantom pregnancy once. She was meant to be in foal tho but had lost the foal but went on to have a full blown phantom pregnancy with all the pregnancy symptoms. She looked pregnant acted pregnant and developed an udder but it was only when she went well over due and we had the vet out that we realised what had happend. We had to have her jagged and it sorted her out but i dont remember her having all the symptoms you describe but maybe she was just lucky. I am happy to say she went on to have a normal preganacy and has never had a phantom pregnancy since.

Thanks so much! I'm sorry that happened to you. I could see the connection with your mare though, my mare has never had a foal haha ! I suppose she could of been pregnant and lost it when she was very young though, she just got a bit chubbier and was filling with milk ! Was weird to see. Hopefully this should get he cycle flowing so it won't happen again. Glad to hear Your mare went on to have a foal !
Edit- what do you mean when you say she got jagged? Thanks.
