hi i am having a few problems with my cob basically i got a new saddle for her about a year ago now and she started arching her back i had the saddler out and she said it was fine yet she still arched her back,i got a back person out and they couldnt find anything wrong,i had a vet out and they couldnt find anything,i then rested her for 6 months brought her back into work and shes still arching her back, shes always been abit nappy and recently she has started being nappy again but its only on the way out,she is still arching her back and now she has started not wanting to go on the way home which is unusal when she is only a couple of minuites away from home and its just abit strange that shes just doing it on the way back it doesnt make sense, all this time shes still arching her back i just dont know what to do,my said that maybe its because the saddle fits her but not me so this could be why,any opinions i would be extremely gratefull

Maybe try a second opinion. its a long shot and will cost more but for your peace of mind How old is your horse.

get a second oppinion on saddle by another saddler. maybe a highly recomended one in your area.
ETA- if that is fine then get the vet to do a more investagative search.

one of my mares used to arch her back vet and physio siad there was nothing wrong back man seen her and said there was a problem with back she never done it again am afraid I can not hel[p area wise

i would think the arching of the back is more unusual and may be causing this.

I would really, really recommend Michael Uden : we have struggled for years to find a good saddler in East Sussex who is truly interested in the horse and rider and not just in selling you a very expensive saddle!! Michael came out to our cob recently, on the recommendation of a local vet, and he was brilliant. PM me if you want his contact details.

The other thing maybe to check out is any connection between your mare being in season and her nappiness/back arching. We had a very similar problem with our ISH mare, and after endless examinations and suggestions that it might be kissing spine (freaking me out!), it turned out to be a haematoma on one of her ovaries, making her very sore and sensitive to having a rider on her back. Worth asking your vet to check?

Defo try another saddler. My last mare had three Master Saddlers to her. They all said her saddle fitted, I said so why does she turn her bum on me when she sees the saddle? Back lady said I don't think it fits. I got another saddler out. Got a new saddle. No more bum turning

Hi maz11,

If it was me, my first port of call would be a good trainer (eg BSHII+ level, BE Novice+ BSJA Foxhunter, etc), who knows not only about saddle fit, etc, but looks at you and your horse, how you ride, etc, etc, what you're doing with your horse, + who also knows about vet side.

(Rather than look at it from either a vet or saddler's narrower perspective)

Good luck, hope she's ok, BS x

Hi again maz11,

The bareback idea from Flowerlady reminded me of a horse sent to me many years ago. All his tack seemed to fit ok, and owner had asked many others beforehand.

He shook his head, hurled himself around, even threatened to hurl himself to the floor. Definitely scary!! I'd dismounted in mid-hurl on several occasions!

Then one day, i thought, if i don't find an answer, this otherwise lovely, young WBx gelding is going to be put down.

So i got on him bareback, just a headcollar, heart in mouth..... And he was fine. I asked a more experienced friend, and she said 'sounds like it's the saddle'. I put mine on him, and he was fine.

Thanks, Flowerlady, for jogging my memory. And maybe good saddler is best first port of call, as other friends suggest. (Thanks for all info, hope my brain has stored it all!)

You mentioned that you got a new saddle a year ago, maz11? How was she before this?

Hope we've helped, maz11, hope you find an answer soon, all bests BS x
