Tom is a right mucky pup... he's the only horse I know who can turn a brand new clean straw bed into a swamp in 3 hours, to the point where the drain used to run over, and the concrete would be stained. Even shavings bed was destroyed overnight.
We went onto wood pellets this winter (if you can claim to be using them for a pellet burner the vat is less, so we buy them for the stove as well)... to cut a long story short... Tom's bed is the direst I've ever seen it, and we add 1-2 bags of dry pellets a week and mix it into the top of the bed. We just skip out daily, sweep the bed back in, and skip out anything that's wringing wet as it's spotted.
Have to agree with Jenhunt, my yearling was the same on megazorb and I couldn't afford to use £35.00 worth of bedding on one horse each week, so changed to wood pellets. Much easier to muck out and the wet stay's clumps together making it easy to muck out.
It is the only thing (I could afford) that stems the tide of urine from my boys. For the first time ever they both have consistantly dry beds that are pleasant to muck out!
