Hi all,

My mare is on day 46 of Chronic Grass Sickness. I am desperately trying to find a 3/4mm alfalfa pellet - but can only seem to find 6mm.
Am already using fibregest which is 2mm but this is not only fibre and as such has a max feeding rate of 750 g.
I am looking for ideally 3mm that can be fed in fair quanities. Please help!!

TIA

No help with the size I'm afraid (although feed mills might be able to make they specifically for you?) as far as i'm aware alfalfa pellets fed in large quantities should be soaked, so surely size won't matter?

Thanks for your replies and links - excellent!

Ah right - hmm - wasnt terribly aware re the soaking thing - I knew it was preferable - but is it essential? She wont eat any wetted feeds :( however she does soak them herself as she has a mouthful then has a drink - so consequently she makes the feed quite wet as she goes along but would not accept it wet to start with! (Fussy mare but perfectly forgivable).
Doesnt have to solely and exclusively be alfalfa - any fibre will do lol!

Oooh - looking at the link I am wondering about the alfalfa crumb- says for poultry though? The pellets look a possibility - although might be 5mm which is starting to get a little chunky.

Just make sure nothing that could be harmful to horses has been included in the poultry feed. I remember reading that some cattle feeds can be highly dangerous for horses so would be weary of anything not specifically made for horses. Could you just take a mallet to the larger pellets and smash them up a bit?

""" This :)

Good luck with your mare's recovery ;)

Thank you all for your posts - I found a mobile number for Valley View, so sent them a txt to check, in the meanwhile i found the horsey porridge and had added it to my basket. They then replied (excellent on a Sunday night!!) saying horsey porridge or the crumb would be fine. So, I have ordered the horsey porridge and hope I can sneak it in :)

We saved our grass sickness mare who was in foal, by some miracle kept the foal and foaled a healthy foal and got in foal again by feeding her Saracen Bio Life. It truly is amazing, they don't need to eat too much (which they can't as they don't want to eat) but it provides all the nutrients they need in a very palatable form with added extras.
