Iv just got to cut back the as most people. I have four horses all on straw except my cob as he eats it but hes getting threw three bales of woodchips a week with rubber matting so now i really want him on straw as i can buy round bale of straw for a tenner. But this horse is a pig example eats bute out of your hand and licks the wormer tube clean so you see my problem what can i put on straw to stop him even it being dirty is not going to help

What I used to do was just put in a couple of slices every day, she would eat it all and then I would just sweep out the stable each night and put down fresh. She always stank though as would just lie in her own poo

We have this problem with ours, we have 2 big horses and 2 small Shetlands on straw, we just put enough in for them to pee and poo on, as horsegirl has said just put a little in each night he'll only eat whats clean and by the time he's peed and pooed on the rest there wont be much for him to scoff, ours are on rubber mats as well.

Have you tried spraying the bed with something to deter him from munching his way through it... something like Virkon?

I use to spray my mares bed when we use to get barley straw in as she use to lay down and eat everything around her lol I only had to do it a few times and she gave up trying to eat it after that...

Blimey, three bales of woodchip a week on rubber matting??? I have three horses on woodchip and rubber matting and one bale lasts me two weeks. I just put in a sprinkling which they seem very content with!

Try cutting down on the shavings?

Ye you're using waaaaaaaay too many shavings!

Ours are on rubber mats and get a sprinkling, just enough to cover really (well apart from my foal but shes a diff story). We probably between three of them use a bag every other day?

hey my boys the same, he has 3 full haynets but if i put down fresh straw he tries to eat it but not anymore as i spray it with something smelly like fly spray and he doesnt bother! :)

spray the straw once you have laid the baed with virkon or a bleach solution as suggested above, stops them eating it and also stops a bit of the dust

If the horse eats Bute out of the OP's hand and licks wormer containers clean he might not be put off by a bit of old bleach!!

Hi thank for you comments theres not alot this horse wont eat im a bit worried if i spray it with something it might make him sick he will be going on wheat straw he is a very dirty horse im sure he invites the other three in his stable at night and they have wild partys
