Can anyone give any ideas tips etc please

I know a horse that is very well schooled that will NOT canter on the right rein. He will strike off on the correct leg but then do a flying change so he's doing a counter canter. He is soured to dressage and won't school for more than about 10 minutes before he starts putting in bucks worthy of a rodeo horse. How his owner manages to sit them is beyond me - I reckon she super glues herself into the saddle

He's had his back, teeth and tack checked and there is nothing wrong with any of them

Any ideas?

(also in comp riders)

Break from schooling. Definitely. If he's bored then he needs more variety in his life... Hack him, Jump him if possible. As far as the canter lead goes; there must be a reason, or something he's avoiding, it's tricky to say without seeing the problem. How about looking into massages etc? Maybe there is an underlying problem with incorrect muscle development etc.

Thanks for replying

He isn't schooled very often and only done dressage once in 4 years. If he doesn't want to do something he will go behind the bit and pull his chin into his chest and bare his teeth lol

He's got his owner and instructors baffled. Today the instructor rode him in case it was something my friend was doing without realizing and he did with the instructor too

He's a red headed irish if that helps

It was just the way you said he was soured to dressage that made me think he needs a change of career. I would still say some kind of undiagnosed muscular problem, that he's developed incorrectly or something. Or maybe, like in my post in CR, he's done too much too soon or has learnt something incorrectly and is just doing the flying changes because he can. Taking him right back to basics may help? How old is he, by the way?

It was because he was soured to dressage that my friend got him. He's rather clever - too clever sometimes

- and learnt to pirouette in 2 days with his previous owner

She is going to get his back and saddle rechecked as soon as she can.
She had planned to do a ridden hunter class with him next weekend so was practicing the right rein and left rein canter which is when the problem appeared. He hadn't been schooled at all for about 3 and a 1/2 years 'til he moved to current yard

Edited to add that he's 12

Hi i would just like to say thanks to you all for your help and Ellies mum for for posting this, my lad has us baffled, he really does not like schooling and i raely do it, so whether he has become lazy (which does not surprise me) or there is a problem i do not know, he is sound, is fit and healthy in every respect, his old owner is coming over to ride him she says he is trying it on, she had him from a youngster and competes at dressage at quite a high level, he is very clever and much more advanced than me. But i did not get him to do dressage but i would still like him to canter on the right rein properly.
