A few weeks ago my pony managed to escape his field and ran out onto the road where he was hit by a car and died on impact. The car was a total write off but luckily the driver was realitively unhurt. Will i be held liable for any damages o the car and driver? Never had this happen before and it's shook me up loads.

Thanks in advance.

Just pass it on to your insurance company.
If you haven't got insurance, which I hope you have, then try your house contrents people, sometimes you have a measure of liability in there I think.
I hope you reported the accident at the time?

Yes I'm afraid you would be liable. One of my horses dumped his rider and bolted off, ending up on a main road where he was in a collision with a car. Thankfully both the horse and passengers survived although there was considerable damage to the car. As the horse's owner I was liable for the damage (around £5000) but was covered on my insurance.

Yes i have public liability insurance on the pony and an umbrella policy on the farm which covers the field he was in, and yes the police were called when it happened. Thanks for the replies, i did think i would be liable to be honest, i feel awful :(

Dont worry yourself and become ill, so sorry for your pony, rip little one.

You wont go to jail, let your insurers know or wait to be contacted by their insurers. If you dont have insurance then speak to citizns advice center or just follow the paperwork you get, if it goes to court you can only pay what you can pay, rest and sleep easy.

Years ago I was thrown by a horse, he escaped onto the road and collided with a car. People in the car were ok, horse had to have stitches but was fine, but, yes, I was liable, and you'll never guess which insurance company paid out without a quibble!

Don't feel awful, sometimes ponies are just accidents waiting to happen. To be cold, at least no people were seriously hurt, and you have an insurance company to deal with it.
I bet you do feel bad though, take care.

You must feel awful, accidents happen which won't make you feel any better, I've had a few. At least you're insured, don't worry, if that's possible.
