Pep is tempramental at the best of times but she is really being an evil bitch troll at the moment.

Last night I was giving her her sweeties and she grabbed my finger, shook me and wouldn't let go

I had to pull really hard (ad painfully) to get my hand back, whacked my arm on the stable door in the process and this morning have a pretty coloured hand and an arm that feels like I have bad tendonitis.

This morning she tried to bite OH's ear off when he was doing up her rug

What is going on with her? She turned 5 last summer and come autumn she has just more and more tempramental. Any suggestions please? Oh, for those that don't know she is a miniature shetland, just incase it makes any odds.

telling her off just goes right over her head - no pun intended. in the summer she is the sweetest little thing but this winter she is horrid, sh'e double barrelled me across her stable for doing up her leg straps, bites, refuses to be caught, has torn down all the electric fencing 3 times but at other times she is just so sweet ad will cuddle and groom you for hours.

She shouldn't really be cuddling and grooming you tbh! Your NOT another pony for her to behave with like that. That's whay she thinks she can kick and bite you as well I would imagine - she sees you as a playmate.

I think hormones could have a lot to do with it, but I would also start treating her like a 16h horse and demand some manners and respect ALL the time - and stop the treats....!!

Well, it seems to me that your Sheltie is dominant in the horse to horse relationship that you have.
You have to either put up with being kicked/bitten....or be the dominant horse by upping your assertiveness level dramatically.
No sweets...don't care if she's grumpy about it...make sure she backs out of your way (or prod her) when you go in the stable...walk towards her and make her back out of your way. Act as if you're squaring up for a fight with someone you hate...if she does kick you, or bite you, then it is time for you to smack her...
Think of it as equine boot camp for a while...I doubt if it is her hormones at this time of year, but there's no harm checking.
Good luck - Shelties are clever little daemons

I cant abide by naughty geegees

or how about dressing as a michelling man, and wrestling the little devil to submission?? or just stand there for a bit and let her boot/bit you and get it out of her system!

im very sorry but the fact your thinking of bbqing your ickle pony is CRUEL! I feel i have no option but to report you to the rspca!

Send your pony to me...I'll put her in with my old mare who will discuss hierarchies, and a Sheltie's place in life.
Then I'll discuss hierarchies, and a human's place in life (normally above anything with hooves).
If that all fails - taxidermy...

My mare became hormonal when she was at the 5 - 6 age. I eventually had her blood tested and her levels were all over the place. The vet gave me some medicines to give her and within a few weeks she was back to her normal sweet(ish) self - we haven't had a problem since although she can be fiesty during the first 'season' of the year.

she has a ball. it gets 10 bells kicked out of it, can't see bouncing it on her head would help at all!

Zalacca, thanks for that. If boot camp has no help, I will get her hormones checked

oh Parelli, I never thought of suggesting that buuuuuttttt..........now that you mention it...............

She sounds lovely! Ive got one that can be a total biatch but doesnt sound anywhere near as nasty as yours can be . bless em - who'd have a mare eh!
