The boys are regularly worked with Drontal but are chewing at their bums a bit, only the puppies, not big dog. They're all fed the same (raw diet). I've heard of a product called Advocate: is it likely to be more effective?

Like a worm count for a horse, I guess? I check poo regularly and can't see anything. I'll ask the vet about it when we go back for suture removal.

Worm count would be a good idea. No harm in asking about the advocate at the same time as its prescription only I think. I use both, advocate does the lot in terms of worms and fleas, the odd exception being tapeworm, so I use drontal every 3 months for that particular nasty.

Actually.... *digs packet out of desk drawer* it even does heartworm, didn't think we had that in the UK yet? Though I believe lungworm is making an appearance?

Anyways it's a monthly treatment, and not the cheapest. But has seemed to do the job in this house so far, despite a habit of trying to gobble anything and everything (the dog that is, not me :p)

Lots of lung worm advice posters in vets this week-can be caught by eating snails!

OH thinks I want to give them egg nog, God, he's finally lost the plot!

Interesting cure lol :D

If I remember rightly part of the reason my vet was so keen on Advocate was due to Loki being a puppy and thus a lot more likely to investigate any snails he came across.

Could it be anal glands? My retriever does the same when his are bothering him. When he was on raw we added bone meal or gave him more bones for a few days and he was better.

Also advocate is brilliant. It's to the back of the neck though so it's always sods law that you need to btw them when your in the 48 hrs no water time :D

Dogs with fleas or lice chew bottoms ..but not puppies with worms,an old wive`s tale. Worm them with Panacur three consectutive days, and use a spot on ,here we prefer Promeris. We no longer use Drontal,as it dsoes`nt cover nearly so much as Panacur does.

Yes fleas tend to populate alot around the top of the tail/back area and it's the most accessible area for a dog to chew at when it's being bitten/made uncomfortable. Advocate does fleas, mites, lice AND worms, so in these circumstances would be a good thing to use, Stronghold is another product that does it all. Though advocate seems to be more popular, again both don't do tapeworm so ensure they are treated for this regularly.

With regard to Advocate, yes it is a POM (Prescription only medicine) so you can only get it from your vet, BUT if your dogs have been seen by your vet in the last 6 months then they may put you some up to collect without needing to see your dogs, so only costing you the price of the medicine, not a consultation fee.

Thanks, was hoping you would reply.

could just be anal glands... or sand passing though from beach?

Dunno about anal glands-aren't they a bit young? It's both of them and Bear didn't go to the beach, the poor baby! Saying that, Zak is evidently an obsessive chewer, like Brig-blasted spangles!
