Hi, have recently acquired a youngster, will be 3 in June. Want to get out and do some in hand classes just to introduce to the world of local showing, how do I get him to trot without looking like I am dragging him behind me?!!
Thanks x

Carry a schooling whip! You want to be level with his shoulder. Start off in walk and give him a little tickle with the whip on his side if he starts to lag behind.:)

Yes, we had that too!! When he did eventually trot he then broke into canter, poor thing looked totally confused then when we stopped!

The first step for me is to teah the horse that his should stays by me where ever i go.

you arnt really allowed to use the voice in the show ring so mine are all taught to trot off of a sort of hiss

you have to be sharp and clear .. in the begining i will have some one follow me with a lung whip i give the cue to trot which is follwed by the whip holder so we end up on the same cue.

basically it goes .. walk walk hiss im off the horse follows.

be aware of your hand, its very easy to be trying to drag or to be pulling on the reins, the horse almost needs to sprint off in a trot then follow your pace.

Thanks, will try and get someone to help me and follow with a lunge whip, we are on a mission now to get a nice trot because he looks like a right donkey if I drag him! Not quite the look we are aiming for!
