As my PC is so deadly slow, I have no chance of watching videos etc and have been unable to watch 'Lil Ol Linda Whacka Hoss' in action. I have read all the comments and have a clear idea as to the goings on. Okay, my problem is this....there is a thread on an Italian forum asking why someones instructor says tha PP and co are violent towards horses. First reply was that the OPs instructor didnt understand SFA and was an idiot, sooooooooooooo......I put up the video but made no comment

So far only one holier than though PP follower has justified her actions. Everyone else (so far) thinks her method leaves a lot to be desired and that she is abusing the horse. I then posted saying that the horse is blind in one eye!!!!! The PP follower no wants to know how I know...............HELP! Apart from the comment on the video site saying he is blind, do we know for sure and how????? Answers on a postcard as quickly as poss please

All you have to do is click on the button to maximise the size of the video, you can clearly see he is missing his right eye. It looks like an empty socket.
I'm amazed the video is available to be honest, the original DVD would have been subject to copyright.

is the horse yours, yes you can see an empty socket. im quite appauled by that video. i have seen this method used in one of there shows at the NEC but it was nowhere near as bad as this. it looks likes shes trying to tech him body space but i dont think making the horse head shy in the process is a good idea.

I've managed to get the video uploaded on to youtube with the help of a friend...

If you want to comment that would be great, the link is below. I've been told if it gets lots of high ratings i.e 5 stars it will come up nearer the start on the search for Parelli, and be accessible to more people...

I'd like to put head collar on her, yank on rope throw my hands up infront of her then hit her wi a rope and see if she could understand what she was ment to do. what a wierd woman. If anyone did that to my horse, Well lets just say they would only try it once!

Cclay, just to point out, this isn't some sort of expose filming, it's from a DVD out of a level 1 training pack.

I read most of the other thread on this a couple of days ago, but have only just been able to view the vid properly.
I'm very disappointed that this person acted in the way she did (understatement!). The emphasise of ALL training methods bar none should be on reading the horse and listening to what they are telling you. There was too much outside stimulus from the start with this horse and it had NO chance of learning anything constructive in this situation. This was blatantly obvious and trainer should have found a different solution to working with this horse ie put it in a different situation where its chances of learning were maximised.

Sadly, I have seen this 'tunnel vision' from other trainers, not just parelli, but everyone from bhs instructors to, most recently, a 'whisperer' trained by the Monty Roberts courses.

It's sad that people are still not necessarily following their own advice. On the other hand, of course, I've done many things which I thought were right at the time, but with hindsight and age (!) I've changed my mind.......

T xxxxxx

Ps I have used bits of lots of different training methods, including Parelli, and found some of it extremely useful.

I didnt like the video based on the part we all saw but when you read the comments someone says if you watch the whole video it gives a different picture as the horse is quite dangerous at the start then after work calms etc?? Would like to see the rest although I still dont agree with the way she is 'training' the horse in this part, they definitely havent thought about his sight issues affecting behaviour :-(

And people actually PAY for that cr*p? They say there's one born every minute!

And they pay a lot of money for the privilege!!!

No matter how many times I watch that I do not feel any clearer about what she was trying to do.

just a little snippet from this months Your Horse magazine in there 5 minutes sextion this month it was Linda Parelli (and this is copied word for word)
Q= What's your biggest bug bear
A=People who abuse horses and know it. Even worse, those who abuse them and don't know they are, because they're ignorant of a horse's needs.
ironic don't you think

It's an area I know nothing of, but the horses distressed breathing makes me sad. Also he clearly does the tongue licking submissive thing and yet she's still ragging the hell out of his head! Think I'm hormonal tonight but even without this thought it was over kill! Shame as although knowing little of parelli I thought it not to be like this.

Disgusting. My friend is trying to do parelli with her haflinger because he kept tanking off with her in the menage. She says it will teach him to respect her. What a load of [****]. Poor horse is so sad and is now very head shy. I've never seen anything so cruel

On the other thread someone asked how they make sure a horse will be caught after being treated like this?

I can tell you and I think it is cruel (read it in one of their newsletters

)

Keep your water fenced off and only allow access to it twice a day. Horse will soon come to call as they then associate you with water

Sorry but I think that is barbaric

I can't prove I read this as have deleted the newsletter as was so disgusted but you don't forget something like that

I don't agree with it, but the withholding of food and water is intended for wild horses.
With this horse, or any other "pet" horse they would use the "catching game". It's pretty easy, based on moving backwards if the horse looks at you, sending the horse off if it doesn't. I'm sure you can find a more detailed explanation if you want by Googling.
You really need to have experienced some Parelli clinics to understand that horses like this, people's own horses that they take to clinics, they don't end up impossible to catch, or killing anyone. They go on to do the things that impress people.

Unfortunately this is not actually a 'parelli' only method. I read about this method of catching a difficult horse many years ago when I was much younger long before parelli as we know it came about. It was in a book that was suitable for younger people (not absolute kids) and was by an author who is well known and respected in the equestrian sector.

Nothing new under the sun.

OK. I understand there is a whole video here, and we are seeing only an excerpt, but I am not happy.

I actually own a horse who is blind in one eye. He is not ridden. It occurs to me that if this horse is DANGEROUS and BLIND, then why ride it? Huh? Has it not occured to Mrs P that the horse has problems caused by its blindness and therefore is no longer a suitable riding horse?

My horse has a cataract and technically, would be OK to ride. It may even happen one day as he has all his life been a trustworthy and very respectful horse. But surely if a horse is exhibiting problem behaviours and there is a VERY OBVIOUS physical cause, then that's what you deal with?

It's like this: a horse is bucking, and you can see it bleeding from under the saddle. Now, instead of arsing about with its brain, why not sort out the bleeding?

The horse needs to put into a field to live out a happy retirement, and the owner and trainer need their heads knocked together!
