mny horse had an abaxial palmar nerve block on left hind and palmar digital on right fore last night. After i got him home i applied warm, wet animalintex and stabled bandaged. Animalintex has been changed every 12 hours, however am noticing horse doesnt seem happy with his hind leg, he is also now resting the leg a lot, there is heat and swelling on left hind and a little heat in right fore.

A little blood-type stain was evident on animalintex applied to left hind after 12 hours, but nothing since

Is this normal???

Am worried hes somehow got an infection. Hes due for turnout tomorrow but i would rather not while hes not happy on his leg.

Ive given him a bute tonight.

Speak to your vet. My older horse had stifle blocks and they swelled up for about a week, all the skin peeled off on about a 3 inch circle surrounding the area.No infection and went away on its own - just a bad reaction to the procedure or something used in it.

no not if they were nerve blocks and not blocks to the joint, you can afford to wait until morning, but ring vet then.

It is possible for them to react to nerve blocks, mine did to one on her left hind and her leg was huge. She was seen by a vet anyway for the original problem and I was told it was just a reaction, and to walk in hand to encourage it drain, and to bandage. It went down after about a week and a bit. I swear she was lamer whilst she had it as well so it was obviously painful.

Mine had nerve blocks recently and the vet also gave an antibitotic injection and as he put it 'because he has just stuck needles in him' perhaps your vet did not take that preventative measure?

Well over the last 10 months this particular horse of mine has been seen by 3 independent vet practices as well as being up at the RVC, all of the blocks (nerve and into joints) she received she was not given a/b's at the same time. So thats blocks given by probably a total of 6 different vets, including those at RVC, but no a/b's at all.

In total my horse has probably had at least 25 blocks over this time frame and only reacted to one, which apparantly was just one of those things (according to a different vet who saw her at that time to the one that did the block, from a completely different practice).
