I have one rubber mat in my stable but the wet always collects underneath it and it gets really smelly and wet and rather gross. I attempt to slosh some clean water and sweep out but the mat it so heavy I cannot really do it properly and the water has no where to go afterwards except out onto the yard and make it all mucky!

Does anyone else get this? It is really handy to have and was going to get another one because it means I can save on bedding. However I was wondering do I have it the right way around because I hate it collecting water like this. It has grooves on oneside and bumps on the other. Currently I have the grooves running horizontal to stable on the underside and bumps on top. Should the grooves be vertical so water can drain out the stable and which side down should it be?

Thanks!

I have the bumps underneath and grooves on top...

I have one small mat at the front of the stable as well that use to always have wet under it. Since going onto wood pellets this doesnt happen anymore...I have also sprinkled the soaked wood pellets under this mat just in case.

I always had my mats with bumps on top, with the grooves going towards the door, so that it can drain.
I think having them horizontal means that the wet has no where to go so it starts to smell.

i dont use rubber mats but have like a rubber mat alternative - more expensive but can lift them with one hand - i put megazorb undermine and it soaks up any excess water and then i change it monthly depending on how wet it is underneath - but it works and i just put it under the front mat where the water/wet runs to xx

Thanks for the replies. Might try the grooves vertical in the hope it will drain. Not sure about putting bedding underneath it because it might make it uneven etc and I don't have wood pellets either but thanks for the suggestion. If first suggestion does not work will try the bumps on the underside. Only problem with having the grooves running vertical is that it will mean it will take up more space vertically than horizontally so will have to re-arrange my bed but if it stops it getting wet than I will try!

Thanks! :)
