Help! Rubbing his tail in trailer!!

I think he's leaning on the back bar whilst travelling and rubbing his tail. I only use a tail bandage at the moment which comes down anyway from him rubbing. Would I be best to use a tail guard or a gel wrap? Or anything else that I possibly havent thought of?

I like the tail guard (have a polly products one which works well). If you are concerend about it slipping off (though mine never has) then you can get ones with a tab to tie it onto the rug you travel with. I wouldn't go for the gel one as I would be concerned that if the horse rubs his tail then a cover that actually 'grabs' the tail and hair to stay on might pull at the hair if it was being rubbed - if that makes sense?!


P.s. if you are in a trailer can you move the breast and breech bars to give a longer space? Might help him to stand on his own without leaning on his tail to prob himself up?

I always use a tail guard over a bandage, it definately helps. You can get different padded versions, but for ones that I've had "sit" on their tail I usually have success with a piece of gamgee between the bandage and guard.

thanks all, will purchase a tail guard then! Breast bar and breech bars are at a maximum at the moment.

I had one that did it so I placed a large sponge at the top of his tail - sticking up slightly - and then bandanged that on, then put a quard on top. Worked a treat and sponges are nice and cheap! Good luck as it I know how irritating it is!

My show horse was an extreme tail rubber (which obviously wasnt ideal!) only thing i found that worked and actually stays on is an avacallo gel tail bandage with a woof wear tail guard ontop and hey presto finally no ugly bald tail ;D
