Hello

Does anybody else have a horse or pony that will only go in one type of saddle? i have had various saddles on my mare (all have fitted) and theres is only 1 saddle she will go in!!

Story below

I am currently trying to find a saddle that my mare will go in, (not just 1 that fits!!).

I have had my mare for 2yrs and she has always been a bit quirky to ride and never really wanted to work properly in to a contact, but had done jumping previously so put it down to this.

I have had different fitters/back people out to her and eventually bought are own saddle a year ago, and have also always been told her back is fine.

So we just pootled along slowly trying to improve things, about 4 or so months ago she started to become quite difficult to ride, and resisting the contact more and more, but was ok to jump etc, as time went on she started to become increasingly hard to jump - would just grab the right rein and p off basically(she doesnt normally hang on the right rein normally the left).

So again had back person out back etc were ok few minor things but nothing to cause concern but she said to check saddle fit as mare was ever so slightly tender were back of saddle would fit.
Had saddler who said needs re-flocking
When he took saddle away I borrowed a friends saddle and my mare went excellent in it like a different horse!!

Problem is i cant find another saddle (other than friends) that she will go in, and cant find a saddle the same as hers for sale!!!!!

What type of saddle is it that you're borrowing? And what's your budget?

It could be however that this saddle is a slightly different fit to your previous one and therefore feels better to the horse at the moment but may not be 100% and the problems could recur if you were to just buy one the same.

I'd be inclined to get her checked out physically first to rule out any teeth or back issues, then once you're convinced that's all fine, book a saddle fitter who could bring out a wide range of saddles for you to try to see what works best.

Good luck! :)

Hello

I believe the one I am using now is a cardanele saddle.

All checks have been done and I currently working with a saddle fitter ATM to try and find one that she likes/will go in.
He has seen what I mean with her as he watched me ride in my own saddle and then with the borrowed saddle straight after, and could believe the difference.

Just wondering if any else has a horse as sensitive/fussy as mine.

thank you for the reply :).

Yes me - I have one just as fussy. She loves the saddle she has now and doesn't like being ridden in anything else or by anyone else for that matter. It is a fairly straight cut one which isn't ideal as I do a lot of jumping but it keeps her happy. She prefers a big thick dead sheep like numnah under saddle too. Fingers crossed for you that you manage to find one that she likes, it took me a while but got one. Mine is a farrington kn vsd. I love it is is very comfy for me too.
