I got my pony on loan last year and got a saddle with her. It was 15" and far too narrow so i bought a synthetic one as i wasnt expecting to keep her long. I put her in the wide gullet and it was fine until she must have lost weight and it started to rub her at the back and she got very sore. After leaving her for a while and changing gullet back to a medium she was fine but it was too narow and stood off her but have useed this gullet until yesterday when i changed it to the medium wide. It stills tood off her a bit but not as badly and after riding her it had dropped to 4 fingers again but both me and another 2 experienced ladies agreed it didint look right. She has NO withers and a very flat back but very little shoulders. She is built sloping downwards on her forehand as well i this adds to the picture. I was planning to buy her a bates saddle this christmas but now tehelaies have advised me to go to a saddlers and have them fit one. My budget is only around £700-£750 and i am really worried that getting one fitted is going to be costly and it is my dad who is paying for it and he isnt planning on going bankrupt for this saddle.
Anyone have any advice or similar expeirences?? Im getting rather stressed out and need some advice!!

For horses like that its always best to get one fitted, we have a small pony with no withers at my yard, owner keeps buying saddles trying them and they dont fit, she has wasted so much money doing this. So much easier and better for the horse if you get one properly fitted

that's quite a bit to spend, honestly!
it sounds as if that saddle really isn't right though. what about The Saddle Company, a lot of people on here really rate them, and i think they're not silly money at all.
just be aware that some "qualified saddle fitters" really aren't that good... try to get a recommendation if possible.
good luck!

Okay then gettingone itted seems the best option. There is a place near me that gets them fitted which is highly recommended. Must speak to my dad.
Thanks!!

Getting one fitted isn't expensive, it only becomes expensive if you buy an expensive saddle. A good saddle fitter should have a good range of sadles to try out, You may find a Bates saddle will not fit your horse, or it may, but it really is important to get a saddle correctly fitted.

I've now got 2 horses that have the exact shape to your pony and the only saddle that seems to fit both of them perfectly is a black country, they even do one especially for this build of horse.I've tried Bates saddles on both and it seems they are made for TB types more so than the no withered ones, they have very high pommels. The native pony company also do lovely saddles that would fit your pony.
