Extract from the Daily Mail:

When Joseph brays, his eeyore reverberates around the village, across the valley... and if the wind is blowing in the right direction, it can be heard in the neighbouring village two miles away.
He does it late at night and early in the morning, often waking residents.

Most residents in the village of Brierley in Yorkshire are fond of Joseph the donkey, despite his noisy braying at all hours
Until now, everyone has accepted the loudmouth ass as a quirk of life in the South Yorkshire community of Brierley.
But a single complaint to the council from an unknown source has prompted an investigation into ‘whether or not the donkey is causing a noise nuisance’.
When residents learned his not-so-quiet life in a field behind the village club could be under threat, they rallied round to launch a campaign to save him.

A Facebook group called ‘Save the Brierly Donkey From Being Shot’ – not that he really faces such a grim fate – has more than 2000 members.

I have a similar problem with my donkey, Pluto.

There is one neighbour to the field who has complained that Pluto brays at 5am. She is a strange lady anyway and has done a lot of complaining about various matters over the years I have rented the field. However it becomes serious when I may have to sell him just because of her. :(

I spoke to other neighbours today and they said they didn't mind, it's part of country life, etc, and they actually find him quite funny. One neighbour said he'd only brayed once so early in the morning.

I live 10 miles away so can't verify the disturbance, he certainly hears my car arrive at the field and welcomes me with a long and loud bray! He also likes to say goodbye when I leave! :D

If you live in the country you should embrace country noises and smells! I wish I could live in her house next to the field! :p

I've nothing to add but want to say I feel so sorry for you Snoozinsusan and also for the owner of the donkey in the paper. Why are people so awful that they care nothing for the feelings of the owners? Its awful.

Totally agree. If you are going to live in the country then you should be prepared to embrace the noises that go along with it!! I hope you don't have to sell Pluto! I'd love a house with land....a donkey would be on my list of animals...as well as a pony, a horse and some chickens!!

Couldn't agree more! At work recently I played some different bird songs to show children how different birds make different noises and one parent started complaining about 'that dreadful noise' and how the birds in her garden have the audacity to do it in the morning!

I hope Joseph the donkey gets to stay put!

birds singing in the garden are one of my earliest and fondest childhood memories of when I stayed at grandparents. I always used to remember waking up in the morning to the sound of singing!

I've skim read the article, so apologies if I am wrong, but it seems to me that Joseph is on his own. Donkeys are very social creatures, that is why the Donkey sanctuary will only home in pairs. Our donkey lives with our retired pony and the only time we hear him bray is if I am a bit late with his tea.

I live near what is now a very posh village, and yet they complain of country smells, noises, and animals!!!!!

Wtf, the country side is an outside factory, end of !!!

It is not quiate and quantril :(

Look into the countryside facts before moving here :) :(

apparently (according to the man who's house backs on to his field) his best friend is a horse and they share stable and field. They chase around like two little children so he says....sounds wonderful!

I'd love a house in the country and I'd much rather have the noise, smells and animals that go along with it as opposed to noisy teenagers staggering back from the 24hr Asda at 4am in the morning shouting to their mates!!! Give me a donkey bray any day!

I am having Pluto gelded in a few weeks in the hope that he will quieten down so that the offending neighbour stops complaining. However I can't guarantee that it will solve the problem. She'll only find something else to complain about!

He lives as part of a small herd so he's not lonely. :)

The article ends: "Councillor Roy Miller, Barnsley Council’s environment chief, said Joseph would not be destroyed even if the case was proven. It is more likely that he would be moved to a remoter field"

So why is the Facebook group called "Save the the Brierly Donkey From Being Shot"?

More dramatic.

^^^This! My donkeys only bray when it's tea time, or if they have to be separated (which hasn't happened in over eleven years).

As mentioned above about rehoming of donkeys from rescue, its not horse companions they need, but donkey companions. So the Brierley donk needs a donk friend!

Stupid neighbours. Agree its the countryside, I have had people moan about my chickens(i dont have a cockerel) but if ie a fox comes in the garden or deer they start screeching. Yesterday I got up at 4am to chuck some bread at them to shut them up. I usually put food out for the morning every evening to shut them up..but I forgot to do it.

Re Donk...IF only people would realise they are such good guard animals just like geese but better. You cannot sneak up on a donkey. The neighbour should be pleased best alarm ever.

Another neighbour got a call early one morning as the cows were mooiing near their back garden and could they move the cows away....

Go back to the city if you dont like the countryside.

Please all keep your donkeys and if one neighbour complains ask the others if they dont mind? If they dont mind ask them to speak to the complainer to shut them up. One person ruins it all for everyone else. PLEASE KEEP YOUR DONKEYS. Motorbikes and cars are worse.
