my 18yr old welsh pony ( who is very hairy!) has loads of little scabs on him mainly around saddlecloth area and a few on his neck.. at first i thought it maybe be ring worm but there are too many and too small. Then i thought its possibly some sort of allergy as all really itchy, or maybe even sweat scabs..but hes not really in work...what do u recon i should do!?! thinking a hibi scrub bath although i will feel really mean as its a tad nippy!!

It sounds like it could be rainscald. Try bathing with hibiscrub and warm water, and gently remove the scabs while they are soft. Keep doing this until all the scabs have disappeared. It should clear up, but if it doesn't, or it gets any worse it might be worth getting the vet to have a look.

Rain scald is a bacterial infection so can occur whether the horse is rugged or not, it just thrives in damp conditions which is why it's common in horses exposed to a lot of rain. Even though your horse is rugged, it could be creating a damp environment for the bacteria to thrive in. I'd still try removing the scabs and keeping it clean and dry if poss. You can always reassess if it gets worse. Good luck

i have this problem with my mare at the moment wash with hibi scrub dry well then apply aloe vera gelly and go to the health shop and get some calnunda and dulcamara and put that in to its feed it helps the skin !

I have had this problem with both my horses. I took one to the vet as she was very itchy too. The best way to get rid of it is to clip out and bath with maleseb shampoo.
