Hi all, I am a doctoral researcher from the University of Turku in Finland. I am starting an online investigation on the Human-horse relationship and the interlink between human personality, attachment theory and the horse environment.

We are looking for horse owners world wide to respond to our survey.

Thank you for your help.

Done it, and don't know how I managed to keep awake during this survey.

OP it is WAY WAY TOO LONG! Good grief, the average person is gonna give up! There are a LOT of questions involved here - and a lot of them are asking the same question but in a slightly different way. Now I actually DO realise why this is, but it just makes everything very long-winded and by the time you've got to this section you're already getting irritated at how long the survey is taking you to complete.

Sorry but I would respectfully suggest that you need to drastically shorten this survey!

I kind of agree with you, but this seems to be proper research instead of those short questionnaires you get that people do to get a degree these days which are really absolutely uselessat producing any meaningful data.

I'm going to try to find time to complete it but I did get very bored before I'd finished the human bit.

Agreed, it makes a refreshing change from the usual undergrad surveys - but I do think they should sort out the security certificate if they don't want to scare people off before they even get to the survey.

Dear Heaven. I was losing the will to live halfway through.
I continued in the spirit of co-operation in academic endeavour.
Very repetitive and may have been less so if it had been run past the student's supervisor.

I did it. Hope it worked. Had some software glitches.

It’s a PhD level survey. It will have been run past their supervisor and an ethics committee and another ethics committee and some department committees and your mom. The repetitive questions are intended to iron out variability in individual responses because people aren’t consistent in how they read and respond to questions.

There a whole can ae worms ye can open in terms of the ability of quantitative data to provide meaningful answers to essentially qualitative questions, but that’s a whole methodological thing for a different paper.

Hi, Thank you for your feed back,

I understand the feeling of repetitiveness in the human part of the survey, This section is already a shorter version of the official BIG FIVE personality questionnaire designed by researcher and commonly used in research in psychology since 1980. I also understand the fact that the survey is very long, it is advertised before the respondent starts and you can take breaks and go back to it. We can not shorten it now, and thousands of people already answered it entirely, I am sorry you got annoyed by it.
Thank you for your attempt to participate.
I wish you all the best with your horse(s).

Sorry its too long, you will get a better response if you make it shorter
Hi, Thank you for your feed back,
I understand the fact that the survey is very long, it is advertised before the respondent starts and you can take breaks and go back to it. According to the scientific questions we are investigating it was difficult to make it shorter. The human psychology and attachment survey parts are designed by other researchers and commonly used in psychology, we could not change them. I am sorry you could not go through it, but I understand the reasons.
Thank you for your attempt to participate.
I wish you all the best with your horse(s).

Hi, Thank you for your comments,

I understand and agree that the repetitive questions in the human bit may be difficult to go through, I did not design this questionnaire myself, i was designed by psychologists and validated by other scientist many years ago. This survey is commonly used in research on human personalities and it is already a shorten version of the original one so I could not simplify it more. Thank you for taking the time to help us despite that, I am very grateful !

All the best.

Thank you for your feed back,

The survey have been run past by my supervisors and by an ethical committee (mandatory), The first bit is very repetitive I agree but I am not responsible for it, this is actually a shorten version of the BIG FIVE personality survey designed by psychologists and validated by many researchers, it is also in use since 1980 for research on human personalities. Same for the attachment theory bit.
Thank you for your help and for taking the time to answer our survey, every single participation is most valuable. I wish you all the best.

Thank you so much for your participation and understanding of this work. I wish you all the best with your horse(s).

Yes it was like one of those psychometric tests you get when you apply for the civil service. I definitely wouldn't have got the job but the horse might have got a second interview 😀

I was just grateful they didn't start asking for my email address and phone number at the end as I refuse to do surveys which ask for personal contact details.

Done for my oldest two (have only had the other one a month so don't know her well enough). One of mine is an utter equine socialite and the other is the dictionary definition of aloof though, so a bit of a contrast!

The repetition is deliberate, it's to catch the people who aren't telling the truth about themselves (though some of them may not even know that themselves). It's a very carefully designed high level study. I gave up when I realised that I couldn't answer it for a horse I've only had 3 months after a traumatic loss. I'll have another go if I can put myself back one year to when I still thought I had a horse who would be my last one.
.

Done. If it's not too much trouble, could you let us know when the results are released/article published?

As an aside, I've been reading through your work on reindeers and elephants and it's so interesting. Hope this doesn't come off as patronising but keep up the good work! We need more people doing this sort of research.

Just a heads up it’s Probably not suitable for people with learning disability and autism as it’s described emotions and personally you could get very different answers from people as the brain works differently with these conditions . It’s could mess up the the study results. There is a few well know members have autism on this fourm.

Thanks for the study participation opportunity. The results gathered from it will be interesting to learn about.

I’m just going through it and have noticed an editorial issue/mistake. Im not sure if its due to the questions being translated from another language into english, but there’s one question that doesn’t make full sense.
Its the set of questions within question 11:

“I'm not interested in abstract or theoretical things.
I like ideas that cannot be put into practice a waste of time”

Should that be “i think ideas that cannot be put into practice a waste of time”?

I obviously can make sense of the mistake, and likely others do too, but initially my brain got confused what was being asked, and maybe others dont make sense of it and likely answer arbitrarily just to get through it, so thought i’d mention it, if you might want to edit it.
It‘s a key question about abstract thoughts and ideas, which can often precipitate innovation, so think you’d want it understood as intended and answered accurately.

I have completed it for one of my boys. I found some of the wording a bit off, perhaps the writer of the survey does not have English as a fist language?? But apart from that it seemed straight forward :)

Working with Equitation Science International (thinking of Lisa Ashton in particular in the UK) would be good, you may already be? I don't have a horse so can't help on this one, soryr.
