The best way to learn is to go to a show and watch a riding horse class.

The class will require you to walk, trot and canter as a ride on both reins. At the end of this the judge may also request an extension or gallop along one of the long sides. After doing yours slow to walk and keep out of the way of anyone else still going.

You will then be drawn in by the steward, perhaps in order or perhaps in a random order. As it is a novice class you will probably do personal shows, which should be a figure of 8 based pattern showing walk, trot and canter on each rein, and a gallop down one long side. You can also do walk to canter and a rein back if the horse can do them well enough not to get it wrong. Finish with a salute and return to your place in the line up.

The alternative to the personal show is the judge ride. Make sure you have room to adjust your stirrup leathers to account for small and tall judges, and a wide enough stirrup iron for a man.

After the judge rides/personal shows they may or may not strip. If they do, you dismount, remove the saddle and brush off any sweat marks. Having a groom to help you at this point is beneficial. Individually you will be brought forward by the steward. Stand the horse up for the judge to look at, then walk away and trot back towards the judge, past the judge and round to your place in the line up. Once finished, resaddle and remount.

After that the usual procedure is for the ride to walk out in original order, and the judge to repull in final order.

If unsure look to the ring stewards and they will keep you right.

Cannot tell you if your horse stands a chance without a photograph.

You should ride in a hunter bridle with a ribbon browband. Most novice classes require snaffles and if possible you should ride in a snaffle. If the horse goes better in a pelham/double, then check the schedule. Some novice classes allow them.

Good luck!
