Help! Smelly carpet....dont read if you are delicate or eating :-)

Bl**dy greyhound has peed on the living room carpet when I was out, and for some reason the smell will not go away

I always clean up as soon as I get in with bleach and water, I have now cleaned the area three times and can still smell it

Not good when my house is basically a 1-up 1-down place, the smell seems to pervade everywhere

Any suggestions for getting rid of the smell, other than hiring a carpet cleaner and doing it that way

I must admit I've never had this before

Febreeze! or cover with Bicarbonate of Soda for the night, then hoover up.

Ahhh I like the Bicarbonate idea - I was wanting something which might sort of soak up the problem and deal with it, rather than cover it up like Fabreeze would if you see what I mean?

Hmmm, off to the shops tomorrow, dont have any bicarbonate as I dont cook

yes but its got to be non bio powder so there is no chemicals that will interact with the ammonia in the wee

Oh god sorry it wont go, it really wont

and if you cover it too much with other smells your dog will just keep weeing over it. Mine had 4 accidents on a rug - cos I kept cleaning / spraying it (it encourages them to remark their territtory), I got rid of it cos the smell wouldnt go and she has never done it again, not even on my brand new carpet (which OH dropped an iron on when it was only 2 weeks old

My dog wont have the opportunity to do it again, she is back in her crate now whenever I leave her

And honestly it will go wonderhorse, I have had dogs all my life and have had similar (if less smelly!) accidents, in fact same dog was initially was a problem at my old house and we sorted her there

It won't ever really go unless you pull the carpet up, cut out that section of underlay, give the floor a good scrub and put a fresh it down then treat teh carpet. Bi carb of soda will really help tho

There is no underlay

The carpet was stained and knackered when I moved in, so all I need to do is get rid of the smell enough to get my damage deposit back when I move out

Why does it smell so much this time though

Never had this before, even with the same dog

At the old house, she peed in the same spot a few times and it didnt smell like this?

you can buy a spray from pet shop cant remember what its called but it is for urine smells etc and it does work called pet magic or something like that. it is good

Whisky and water mixed and sprayed over the area works wonders with animal smells (I should know - at one point I had 5 dogs and 12 cats - smelly!)

My mum uses a spray especially for pet odours. Its a brand called Simple Solutions (I think!). Its rather good. Her 10month old pups are staying with me for a couple weeks in a top floor flat and the boy has on a couple of occasions peed as he was desperate in middle of the night!

I think she buys it from internet but it might be in pet shops too.

Think I'm the expert with smelly carpet........I've just ripped up the stair and landing carpet and intend staining the stairs and landing - DEFINITELY no more carpet! I've tried literally everything to get rid of the smell but it still "hovers", if you know what I mean! Febreeze, numerous products from Pets at Home etc, but all to no avail - the carpets HAD to come up!

As for Jo-jo's suggestion of "Simple Solution" - yes, this was brilliant at removing stains - definitely THE best - but longterm solution is wood-stained stairs and landing...NO carpets

Bloody dogs....puppies in this case.....but don't you just love 'em????!!!!!)

I wash the carpet with Ecover hand or delicate wash liquid ( NOT washing up liquid). Not sure which it is called but probably delicate . Works wonders with incontinent JRT .

Simple solution, in the big bottles, whack a LOAD down and let it evaporate without any intervention (we hairdried it once though cos we had guests coming over and it worked anyway). Its INSANE that stuff! xxxx
