My horse is a 6 year old irish sport horse (just turned 6). I've owned him since september and had no lameness problems apart from feeling a little stiff when starting work after being in the stable and occasionally wingalls on his hind legs after a one-day-event.

A couple of weeks ago another horse went out in his field (he's normally on individual turnout) and they played a lot and he had a few 'nicks' on one of his hind legs. He had a few weeks off as was 2/10ths lame. Then vet came out again and said he was 100% sound however he's had hind leg windgalls ever since that will not go away (tried magnetic boots, cool boots and is now on 24/7 turnout) and he feels stiffer when I first start riding him - after five minutes he's fine but he does start out feeling a bit stiff! The vet has said he's sound and he's back competing well so I was wondering if I should try some joint/mobility supplement or something to help get rid of the windgalls and ease his stiffness...any advice or supplement recommendations?!

Have a look at the feedmark website. I find their supplements to be good.

Stiff where? There are loads of different stretches you can do that work far better than any supplements that I have found on my big draught who has always been stiff through his neck and shoulder since I got him at 4 and he is now 16.

plus stretches are free!

This is interesting as I had exactly the same problem with my 6yo ISH a couple of months ago. He also shared his field with another horse and they used to play around a lot (spent 80% of the day on their hind legs

) - needless to say they are separated now.

I had the vet out who trotted up, saw him on the lunge and said he looked 'stiff all over' but couldn't see any lameness. Passed flexion tests etc all fine, so she was stumped. He had a few physio sessions but they didn't seem to help.

Since then I have had a McTimmoney chiropractor work on him twice and I cannot believe the difference it has made. She found he was locked up in his neck and all along his spine (so not surprising he looked stiff all over!).

I would definitely reccomend a chriopractor if you've not tried it already, has worked wonders for mine.

Interesting! His stiffness is in the hind legs where the windgalls are. I have a Mctimoney chiro that came out on about 10 days ago and tweaked a few things but nothing major and nothing has changed since... he's been very highly recommended so would have thought he was good but maybe I need another opinion?
