One of our tribe has ripped a claw out on a back paw. The vet’s seen her & she’s had painkillers for it and the wound itself is clean BUT she’s a licker…

We’ve tried socks & she just chews a hole in them & then licks through the hole and anti-chew stuff on the next sock didn’t work either. I know the best answer is a satellite dish collar but she’s a rescue & she does panic at things & I don’t want to do that to her if I can help it.

The vet’s suggested anti-lick strips leaving a collar as a last resort but does anybody on here have any other suggestions?

I recently found out that the one thing my boxer girl would not lick was sudocreme.
Wish I had found this out years ago as I had tried everything from bitter spray to tobasco sauce and she licked them all. Never touched the sudocreme though!

Give it a try. If it doesn't work it won't do any harm. Anything to avoid those dreadful collars.

Good luck.

Can you vet not wrap for a couple of days? Mine tore a section out of his pad on barbed wire made a right mess of himself and hes a chewer so we wrapped until repaired. Had to do it daily though to keep it clean. They heal pretty fast which is a bonus.

We could do but I was trying to keep it "aired" hence the socks. Got to be better than a collar though if it comes to it, hasn't it.

Never thought of trying sudocrem! We have some of that at home, might give that a go, it between her toes where she's licking so I don't need to put it on the wound.

Thanks both of you, that's another couple of things I can try :)

This might sound crazy but try putting a bandage on one of her front paws. It seems to distract them and because it is easier to get at than a back paw they concentrate on that one. Its not guaranteed but I have known it work a few times :)

Ask for an old drop bag from the vet, vet wrap it on. There's a using thing that stops them reaching paws to lick, goes round the neck, won't be as scary as the buster collar.

Hi my dog is a serial licker and caused his own wound from chewing and worrying at it. I used Cam Rosa which as you know can be used on most pets and horses helps heal the wound to he still licked but I think it healed quicker:):)

Update on madam

I posted this question on another forum as well & one of the suggestions from there was to put a dab of vicks on her sock & as we had that in the house (I've lost the sudocrem somewhere) I tried that first - and it worked! so I thought I'd share the tip.

Thanks everybody here for your suggestions, I now have a list of things pinned on the fridge to work through if the vicks stops working. :)
