My pony is clipped out, apart from a saddle patch & legs. He has been turned out recently in a mediumweight FAL with neck cover. Last week he had a hoon around the field with another horse and came in dripping! I unfortunately wasn't there at the time but someone else at the yard got him in and walked him off until cool. 3 days later I took his NZ off and thought he had been kicked on his back (site of freezemark). It didn't seem to be painful. The next day, he had 3-4 lumps, all approx 1cm in diameter and after parting the hair, I discovered crusting & heat. I Hibiscrubbed the area and removed the scabs which left a raw area underneath with a yellow/white pinhead (flush against the skin, not raised). I had unfortunately run out of Fusiderm so I put some Sudocrem on to soothe it (prob totally the wrong thing). I phoned my vet who suggested to continue the same treatment, but instead of Fusiderm, to use Haemmorhoid cream due to its steroid & soothing properties! I have been using this treatment for three days now, and the initial lumps have gone down and are now just dry areas of skin, however new lumps are coming up every day. My question is - has anyone experienced this before? Is it anything to do with the overheating incident? Are there any other treatments I could try? Obviously if it hasn't improved by Monday, I will be getting the vet out for a skin scrape etc. Many thanks!

Never heard of this one! The only lumps that size I've heard of or know of are mite bites. I've seen a couple of horses overheat, but they never got lumpy afterwards. Hiope they go quickly/vet sorts out quickly.

Yes both my horses got similar things last year and couldn't ride while they were there tried alsorts to get rid of them eventually vet gave us some steroid cream but they have come back again this year had skin scrapes and allsorts still no wiser! Please let me know what your vet thinks it is?

My horse has a few small lumps on his back (saddle area) that re appear every winter, my vet gave me betnovate which did the trick although they have re appeared again this year. Vet said if they are treated early they will go but if not they will stay. I cant remember what he said it was but think its something to do with sweat and granulistic sp was mentioned.
Could your horse be too warm, it isnt that cold yet. Maybe do away with the neck cover????

My horse gets them, he is allergic to his own sweat. I have to wash him off after exersise even if he isnt noticably sweaty other wise the next day he will be covered in lumps. He is clipped regularly to keep him cooler and never over rugged, so far this year we have been ok.

Update: more lumps had come up yesterday - no crusting on top etc, then this morning I wanted to show someone else at the yard to get their opinion and as I lifted the rug back, there was a bug on the hair! I immediately thought it was a tick, but it certainly wasn't clinging onto the skin and wasn't full of blood. I thoroughly searched all over my boy but couldn't find ANYTHING - no other signs and bearing in mind he is a native and is unclipped on legs and saddle patch I thought I would at least find other bugs! It was approx 3-4mm and grey in colour. I don't think it's lice due to the fact that the rest of his body seems to be clean - can anyone shed any light on this?
