Ok i need all your help please people !!

My youngster (well 6yo) gets very tight and upset in an indoor school but he is getting better the thing is he is just so strong !!! he has a paddy and is a bit nappy but when i make him jump he sort of says ok but we are going to do everything at 200 miles an hour !!

I ride him in a pelham (no curb chain and with roundings) he is ridden in a plain snaffle for everything else and i can jump him at home in one its only out round a course !! I dont want to put anything stronger in him or ill have a head in my face and refusing to go forwards and probably upwards !!

He hates loose rings which is why he is in a pelham as at home and outdoors he is very happy in this !! he has his back regularly done and teeth checked - also this only happens indoors !!

Do you think its a case of just keep taking him till he realises or do any of you wonderfull people have any ideas of what to try i dont think my arms can take much more of this !!

Personally I would just keep taking him until he realizes its no big deal...as long as he doesnt get too dangerous and try and get you off.
If he is scared, changing his bit is unlikely to help as he will run off in anything you put him in. And you are right, anything stronger may make him rear, or just stop him going forward all together.
Some places will also let you hire the school for a while, so I'd do that if possible and just work him in there, keeping him calm and if possible lunging him in there. The progress to jumping from a trot only. Some horses dont like the sound and lighting/shadow in an indoor school. I used to have one that freaked when they rang the bell ...!!

Good luck and let us know how you get on...stay safe!

thanks Steve - this is what im thinking to i will just keep going to lots of clear rounds !!! I went to patchetts last saturday the first round was a bit scary but the second round we got a lovely clear - though a bit fast !!

Ive hired places but he isnt as bad as i think there is a different atmosphere on a show day with lots going on so he does behave himself !!!

well i havent come off yet and im not jumping anything huge (i mean 75cm at the most) so we shouldnt get into any difficulties - just so annoying because at home he will jump 1.20/1.30 courses as good as gold - i go out and i cant even get around a 75cm !! ha ha

It may be the show atmosphere that gets him a bit overexcited too (do you jump indoors in the daytime or when its dark?). Do you always canter him or will he go into the first jump at a trot? obviously it helps if you can get him back into a trot once he gets strong without upsetting him too much.
Just keep going and getting those clears...he'll learn

also final thought is that he may not be respecting the fences as he knows he can go much bigger, so he just has fun and charges around at them. Have you tried a bigger track indoors yet?

Is he a big horse? My big mare used to rush her fences indoors and we'd end up almost doing the wall of death inpersonation

She just found the space indoors too tight as a youngster and he used to worry her, so her reaction was to get faster.
As she got older and with more schooling she became more balanced and I suddenly found I was having to use my legs, she now jumps in a lovely rhytym indoors

During the day - its just all the noises etc

I used to try from a trot but then we dont have enough impulsion and thats when he naps in canter we do them just very quickly !!

I do hope he does i must say he is getting better !!

I thought of that to but then thought i dont want to go bigger indoors as its a bit of a kamakazy at the moment and i dont want him to scare himself - atleast when he does back of and try and nap i can make him jump the smaller ones from a stride out or in trot if i need to !!

my mare was like that but she loves it and after taking her once i went straight to jumping a bigger class as she just thought BN and Disc were fun !!!

unfortunately not he is only 16hh - your right though i think he finds it hard to balance as it is tighter in the indoor !!
