Help - sweet itch hell

youve all given tons of advise : decided to visit hilton at YHL as rang them and there mix has some of the things listed above they are sendin sample as my mare can be fussy, v helpfl:)

We have a horse here who has itching problems we have found a new product developed for the Scottish midge and its called Smidge our horse is now happy and has a mane and tail intact we also stable and rug with a hood much happier horse
I think if you google smidge you will find the product smells great and was created with a univerisity

How come it made it worse?? We were still advised to keep him covered, it isn't a cure it just gives a little relief, like painkillers, that doesn't cure it, it just eases the symtoms. The clue is in the name...DESENSETISE (sp?!) to make him less sensitive.

But as I said in first post, the vet himself said he has heard 50/50 reviews, we were just fortunate to be in the luckier 50. I do not know however if it will be just as affective next year, I don't know wether he will build up a resistance to it or against it but this year he has been the happiest sweetitch wise in 15 years.

My vet told me it works on some and doesnt on others! I kept him covered and correctly administerd the continuation dose injections but he ended up the worst I've ever seen him, he rubbed all the hair off his head, inside his ears he was red raw, he completely trashed his mane to the point where I had to hog him, it made me cry watching him suffer so much, vet agreed it wasnt for him so I stopped. He wears a Snuggy Hood sweetitch set now and he has a full mane and tail as befits a Spanish horse, he has no supplements and doesnt have any sprays and creams put on him.

Less is more has worked for him over the past couple of years!

I was gifted a wonderful standard size shetland recently and he has SI. This is what has worked for me.....giving him a marmite sandwich every day has made a huge difference, a lot of his rubbed off hair has grown back in. Its the brewers yeast in the marmite that helps. Plus, I feed Global Herbs Scratch plus....disgusting smell and taste but he will tolerate it. If you want something more palatable, start off with the Scratch one first, then if need be use the scratch plus. Stay away from garlic though, you probably already know that! Good luck, I know how distressing it can be to watch them suffering!

But it will still end up with the same result no matter what he is allergic to...and the vet said that there really wasn't much point as the results are too broad and for too many different things. If you test any horse it will come up with results that it is allergic to something. There was also another eason I can't really remember it was a long time ago but it was something to do with it being an American company and wouldn't give the results we needed so it would be better to try a course of desensitisation which would cost a similair amount to the blood test + allergy tests and sending to lab +results etc and if that works then keep going if not maybe think about testing again, but it did work so now I have a much happier pony.

The company that did the allergy testing made the solution that I injected into my horse. There was a seperate one for his allergy to the sweetich midge and one other solution for all his other allergies, thats why he was tested in the first place so his allergies could be specifically identified so as to make the correct solution to DESENSITISE him!

Hey havent had time to read all the posts so Im sorry if this has already been said :-) , I had a clydie who had horrid SI when I first got him.......I spoke to these people http://www.nettexsupplies.co.uk/ they have amazing products! I swear by all of it esp the brewers yeast but you must feed all year long every single day and Id say it takes a year to work but stick with it. pm if you have any q's :)

I think you ought to research Immunotherapy/desensitisation a little bit more so that you know what your talking about. God only knows what un-necessary chemicals youre injecting into your horse without a care in the world.

The definiton of immumnotherapy/desensitisation is as follows:

Immunotherapy/desensitisation is defined as the practice of administering gradually increasing
quantities of an allergen extract to an allergic subject to ameliorate the symptoms associated with
the subsequent exposure to the causative allergen.

...... which means you need to identify your horses allergens so an increasing amount of that specific allergen can be injected into your horse therfore down regulating your horses response to said allergen!

Have you any idea what you are injecting into your horse??????????????????

This may seem odd but it has worked for us. Avon Dry Oil Spray (the original one) applied liberally. Sadly, it only comes in small bottles but it is cheap and is often on offer (buy one get one free etc). He also has marmite.

I have also heard that Avon Skin So Soft dry oil body spray is good. I used Benzyl Benzoate this year and no rugs, my mare has been happy and has a lovely long mane and full tail.
