This is a bit of a random question, but I have to teach some people how to do turn on the forehand tonight.

I know how to do it obviously, but could someone just tell me how I could explain it simply to some people, in simple steps and all the correct things to do. I don't want to miss anything out and look silly!

Would you make people come off the track, or just start by doing a half turn first? I have to do a 10 min lesson on it, and I've never taught anyone before so will prob be a bit rubbish.

I would do one whilst facing the wall in a the school, then the horse finds it easier (as it cant go forward). Simple aids for turning, inside leg to encourage horse over, o/s leg to block movement once finished. i/s rein bend & o/s rein help with direction/speed. I also use voice on young ones, "go round" works for me.

If the horse has not done one before I use person on ground to encourage horse over (ie away from them)

People make a big thing about them, but its just a turn which is made by the hindquarters moving around the forelegs which are fixed. You would use these aids without thinking about it to open a gate whilst out hacking.

Yes use a solid wall or fence as that makes it easier first time. Just do half turn to start with that is all I can really help with. Make sure the pupils understand the therory that REALLY helps! Like the post above says, the back legs walking around the front legs, then it helps riders t picture what is going on below.

Hmm - I'd do it by putting the horse on a slightly inside track. Then the head is supposed to turn to the outside so outside leg behind the girth & half halt outside rein. I agree that you need to explain that you're pushing the quarters around the forehand. Also the half halt is important.
A good exercise is to do 1/4 turns on a square
