does anyone have experience with young horses and geese, there is a goose rearing place about to be built right next to our land where our horses are kept we will have to ride right along side where the geese are turned out!!!my horse is not very brave and allready has a bird issue!!your thoughts on what i could do.

Can't see the problem, sorry. Your horses are kept next to the geese, they will get used to the geese.

My horses live alongside a railway line, they just get used to it!

I know it's not quite the same but there is a lake next to our yard with a lot of geese and ducks that squawk a lot and fly overhead, the horses never seem bothered - now if it was a horse eating crisp packet farm that might be different! Good luck.

My neds dont give a hoot and graze quite happily with my geese . They can flap their wings under their noses and there is no reaction whatever

.Now if a pheasant takes off from under the hedge..well thats different, isnt it

I would get myself a really good set of earplugs, they make the most horrific noise when disturbed

. Im sure that given time, your boy will become immune to them

mmmm not sure a few geese on yard is quite the same as up to 500.but i spose im about to find out.i know they will get used to them but its the bit in between that worrys the s***t out of me!!also they wont be directly next to them where they graze so they wont c them untill we ride up the track!!

We have a huge flock of wild geese that have invited themselves to live with our horses. Cedric was terrified of birds but now they eat round him whilst he is laid in the field no problem. It has helped him get used to birds. Woody hated pigs. We moved opposite a pig farm and he has got used to them. At feeding time they make a huge noise so when my daughter rides past and they make a noise he no longer reacts. Now Jazz is terrified of whistling hedges. A person was walking behind a hedge whistling and she thought it was the hedge. Terryfied the poor horse. I had to laugh.
Your horse will become accustomed as long as you don't react yourself.

We have a huge flock of geese that live on the yard next to me and I have never had a problem and its also used by the pony club for rallies etc and never known it to cause a problem you should be fine to be honest.

i'd be more worried about being chased by the geese myself to be honest! they scare the life out of me!

They will be confined to their own land and your horse will soon accept the noise. Sorry, really can't see a problem.

they will get use to them, at my yard you have to go pass 10 to 15 pigs and piglet to get into the yard and out. the horse don't even bother about them anymore

They will get used to them We have geese chicken and ducks with our horses - and they all are quite happy to be together. If your horse has a bird issue then this is probably the best thing that can happen - gives your neddy a chance to get over it.

I have had a few youngsters in with me over the last couple of years and quite often they will be scared of the ducks and geese to start with - but they very soon get over it!!!

thanks everyone for your posts hopefully we will be fine,to tricksy im in stones green which is a mile from wix eq.its going to be an organic one covering about 30 acres!!he keeps trying to tell us that geese are not noisy!!!ha ha he must think were stupid!!

I just hope that your goose farm doesn't smell as bad as some chicken farms do!!!!!!!

When we were house hunting we turned down the most beautiful, perfect house, as half a mile away there was an enormous chicken farm and we were downwind....it stank!

Echo what everyone else says, the horses will become accustomed to them in time.
