really need some advice as i thing ive stuffed up again.
a year ago i bought a horse who was my dream and 6mths in he went lame due to a kick, i broke my ankle and then he got another kick so spent the first 6 months off work, once we were both fit i thought great but no he went lame with suspensory ligament problems both hind legs and had a op 3 months ago but not doing great. this horse passed a full 5 stage vetting and is a mess bless him with not much hope of him ever being sound.

a few weeks ago we bought another horse this time unvetted after the last problems and i noticed the other day he is rotating his hind leg kind of like a swivel motion in trot and this is now freaking me out.
he is naturally very close behind and always had a full set of shoes but my farrier told me not to put backs on as he was really unbalanced and not much to put a shoe on.
he is now brushing behind and has this swivel action.
we are getting physio out and farrier back out to put shoes on and see if this helps but its blowing my mind that i might have another huge vet bill coming my way.
i know a lot of horses have this action in walk but never seen in in trot and also he cant arrange his legs after a jump. its kind of like he cant work from

behind. he goes well in to a jump and is trying but cant if that makes sense, he also finds it hard to trot up hill and is a larger horse who struggles to work from behind.
he needs schooling and understand this could be part of it but im not sure.

at the mo i am sat in tears dreading the futrue of both horses and unsure what to do with the new one. do i get physio and farrier or do i get the vet??

Farrier and vet together.

Forgive me, but why the heck did you buy an unvetted horse after the first became unsound? Had a lame horse like your first and was paranoid so had a 5 stage done on my second.

How old is the horse, what's his history and how well do you trust your farrier?

I'm guessing he felt being without shoes was beneficial and if you trust his judgement then see what his thoughts are now if there has been some deterioration in movement...

If your gut is telling you though that there is 'something' that needs to be identified and paid attention to - you probably do need to listen to your gut and ask the vet to visit... Does your vet offer a discounted area visit day or could you share a visit with someone else?

Are you able to take photos or a video if him being walked/trotted in hand to see if someone here or the vet section is able to offer some experienced advice?

:)

Dot panic yet hon, He could just be weak or it could bejust the way he moves either way Im sure it could be imporved.

I just bought a horse unvetted. He forged badley and really dragged his hind toes to the point I thought he was lame in both hinds. He wore the toes off completely and had to be shod with special shoes to protect the toe.

He was VERY weak and skinny and weak behind. I have now owned him 10 weeks built up his condition gradually bought him into work as his muscle and balance has improved his toe dragging had stopped. It took about 8 weeks of work though.

what sort of work had your horse done before you got him?

Have someone take a look it may put your mind at rest. I have physio for my horses every 6 months or so anyway, and find their advice on how to strenghten my horse invaluable. So why not get one out and get an assesment of your horse since it is new to you?

i have changed vets now and normally trust farrier but im a complete mess. part of me thinks im looking for something as feel guilty about getting another horse the other thinks it needs looking at.

I agree with the dont panic. I am permanently looking for problems in my new horse...my other one has had terrible lameness issues for 10 years and now I cannot help but assess him all the time!

Now you have established there is a problem then it goes without saying to completely avoid anything like jumping.

He may just be weak, I would get a vet to assess him, you need some professional help. If you have lost trust in the vets then 'vet the vet' I know that sounds stupid but a bit of research into the local vets might help.

others at yard have just said he is weak behind and a front wheel drive
he has just been mainly hacked for last 18mths so needs muscle but not under weight at all.
you can feel it when riding at all but can see it on ground. he stance seems closer since shoes came off.
i was thinking physio then farrier to put shoes back on and then physio again. the farrier commented he wasnt balance behind at all and his shoes were bad tho feet really strong

It does sound like he is weak behind maybe its a bit confirmational. But seek help so you are certain. After having one lame horse you do tend to look for problems

You would not believe how much mine has improved just with decent farriery and correct work.

thanks i will get vet to look when checking my other boy in the next few weeks if he doesn't improve now being worked more regularly. as i said you cant feel it when been ridden. he is perfect in canter no swivel at all and cant really see it in walk it just the trot that looks weird but foot fall perfect.

i had first horse vetted and loads were missed so decided against getting new one vetted

Missed? Or simply not apparent on the day of the vetting?

You need to get your (current or another) vet out, you should not be getting a physio without your vet's permission - any physio who does come out without vet opinion is acting illegaly.

Good luck x
