i am in need of a number for a someone who trains dogs to live with the elderly.

my boyfriends nan has just past and his grandad is desperate for a dog of his own, which i have conviced the family that if we get one trained it would be the perfect company for him now as not everyone can be with him 24/7.

i was once going to trian guide dog myself but now cant seem to trace them, or anything similar!!

does anyone know anywhere that trains dogs to deal with elderly people?!?!?!

HELP!!!!!

You shouldn't need to train a dog to live with the elderly

Just get a quiet natured dog - perhaps an older rescue one that is looking for a nice fireside and an easy life

And be prepared to take the dog on yourself if your b/f's grandad can't cope with a dog??

Im confused does it need to be trained to live with the elderly or does it need to be trained to live with a blind person?

As above really if its the former, get a quiet older rescue dog and Im sure they will be firm friends.

As for a guide dog I have no idea, try googling it.

he can look after it we just want something calm and quiet thats not going to knock him over or anything as he is quite frail, something trianed to help him eith things in the house too.

Try Dogs for the Disabled? Not sure of their criteria, but they train dogs to do stuff around the house

ETS - or just an older, small dog (JRT or similar) which would be a nice companion but not too boisterous & wouldn't knock him over

but also i dont want one too old because it will cause him more heartache if it dies within the next year if you see what i mean.

As suggested their are plenty of oldies in rescue centers that have come from similar homes that u are offering due to sad circumstances or maybe the owner became to ill to care for them or had to be placed in a nursing home....we have 3 oldies and we regurlarly rehome to older people or nursing homes.....there is a rehoming center called oldies...maybe try googling some rescues to find them.

Ps they are not always ancient either....you can get some very fit and healthy oldies and many we keep rehoming seem to keep out living the owners

Might stand corrected....but I think cinnamon trust work off people estates being left to them when u take a dog/cat from them.
I.e.....the dog/cat u adopt from them will be from someone who has previously died and left cinnamon trust their house/money e,t,c....as well as their pets...so I think they expect the same from new owners.

I was also going to suggest the Cinnamon Trust

Web address for Oldies is below in my sig....like Cala says, they're not all ancient dogs; I think they consider an 'oldie' to be anything from 7 onwards.

But if you need something trained to help with stuff around the house....well then yes, you'll need to approach Dogs for the Disabled.

Hope your boyf's grandad finds a lovely companion soon
