My mare is acting weirdly ATM. It's subtle but I'm sure something's not quite right (but then on the other hand she could just be in season and acting weirdly ) All the same, I really am scratching my head at the moment.

I just wondered if anyone had experience of a mare with a urinary tract infection - what were the definitive symptoms?

My mare looked like she was trying to pee again and again with no actual pee, she was also sweaty. Called vet, can't remember treatment but quickly and easily sorted, no recurrence in ten years. Hope this helps, if u have thermometer take temp and if abnormal prob good sign of infection and vet required. Hope she is ok.

Thanks Meesha. I'll take her temp tomorrow morning and get the vet out if she's even slightly elevated.

I just cannot put my finger on what's bugging me about her. But something is.

Yesterday when I brought her in for the night she stood up and peed a small squirt of thick milky yellow pee. Although slightly odd as no other horses about at the time, I though, "Ah, in season!" and though no more. Put her to bed and left.

Today she just seemed slightly off generally. She ate her breakfast and tucked into her hay with gusto but when I hacked her out at walk around the block (in company of 2 geldings), she just didn't feel right. Even just walking. She moved slightly oddly (can't quite describe it) and kept raising her head and carried herself in a very tense and uptight manner. Although I thought she was probably in season at that point (hence the odd uptight attitude) she didn't seem to have particular interest in the geldings. But the head carriage and body language was totally out of character for her today.

When we got back to yard and she was untacked and back eating her hay, her stance was a bit odd too. This made me wonder more. She seemed slightly braced. Back legs slightly behind where they'd normally be. Once or twice she moved and stood up to pee and produced a small amount of thick, milky urine each time. She didn't seem in particular discomfort, but then again there were no other horses around to stimulate the 'in season' quirt and her general demeanour doesn't suggest she's in season like normal. So I am not convinced these's squirts of urine are 'in season' symptions. But I dont know. There's something slightly amiss with her. Just don't know what.

My mare had a urinary infection a few years ago, she kept wanting to wee, but couldnt always, and when she did it was very strong smelling. She also looked uncomfortable and had a slight temperature.

Got vet out, and was put on some anti-biotics (cant remember what), and it cleared up pretty quickly, never had it again.
