Help, Vet has recommended euthanasia

I would ring another vets practise who have a more advanced portable xray machine. I have recently used one on a fractured splint and my 2nd opinion vet brought out the most advanced equipment with laptop so images could be seen immediately. I think the xrays cost £130 and he took 6 shots. :)

Agree with this.

If your vet is still using developed film for their xrays, then they are many, many years behind the times.

Change your vet to one who has a machine that will put the images straight to a laptop, and you will not need to take your boy anywhere.

Film xrays are bad news. They degrade, so you cannot always use them in future to compare changes. They also take a long time to develop on the day compared to disk images.

As guidance, I recently paid £250 for 3 xrays of my horse's neck done to laptop on a mobile machine.

An MRI will set you back a minimum of a thousand pounds.

Agreed, My vet also has a portable x-ray and I've had quite a few done. The images are emailed to me later so I can keep them in a file. I know this isn't much help to you. Is there another practice in your area with up to date equipment?

I do wish you well, but it looks like you've already given four good years and the problems are escalating and will undoubtedly get worse. Tough decisions indeed.

My vets have 2 mobile x ray machines

one needs to go back to surgery to be viewed, the other shows on screen straight away.

You can't always get the latter as if there are bones broken cases it goes there first. (fair enough)

OP good luck with your pony, I wish you the very best.

If it does sadly come to the PTS, you can mentally know you gave him the very best treatment. Gave him a lovely 4 years of safety and best care.

Which sadly he would not have got if you had not saved him. You should give yourself a pat on the back for all you have done for him.
I know you don't want to lose him but if there really is no hope then he will run pain free over rainbow bridge. Fingers crossed for you and pony :)
