Hi I have just taken on an ex racehorse. He is an 8 yr old TB gelding hasn't raced for over a year so has had time to chill etc !!

He is kept with 2 other geldings who all seem to get along, the problem I have with him is he goes beserk if he is on his own. Saturday the 2 boys where at show in the afternoon and he jumped out the field and went off down the road !!

I can't ride him out on his own ( he is ok with company) but I can just about manage to bring him in and lunge which is going well.

I did expect various problems to come with him when I bought him but think I need some help.

As I am in Jersey I was thinking of bringing him over to the mainland for a week. Can anyone reccomend anywhere that woudl take us on for a week or 2??

Ideally near Poole / Weymouth / Portsmouth or anywhere south of England considered??

may be worth having a look on the local equine directory www.nfed.co.uk

They don't always settle eventually when stabled etc and can do themselves harm trying to escape, i think avoiding leaving him alone until someone can help gradually with the problems (there's no quick fix) is a better plan than risking broken legs or worse by hoping he will 'settle eventually'

Fwiw i would make a plan for gradually separating, eg just leading a little way from others but still in sight, then further and further for short periods and in a safe area with riding hat and body protector on. Then just out of sight for very short periods, increasing gradually longer. But i say good on you OP for looking for someone to help, even if they can just teach you some ways of handling etc that you can take back with you, it sounds a good plan to me.

Well he came all the way in from the field tonight and had a groom and some feed. Although he is now lame after jumping out the field on Sat!!! Vet coming tomoz, hope it's not box rest :-(
