Hello,
My husbands horse has a very large lump on her chest beside her right leg. It's about the size of a baseball and grew from
nothing to that size in only 20 days. I am hoping someone on here will know what it is as I'm trying to decide if I need to have the vet out immediately or if it can wait a month or two till warmer weather as she does not stall well.

It's squishy to touch but it doesn't hurt her at all and she is not lame.

Last spring she had a large crust like scab that stuck a couple inches out from the exact same spot. The vet checked it and said he could remove it but it would probably grow back and since it was not bothering her we left it and one day it just fell off.

Does anyone know what this is??? It seems so strange that it grew so quickly and that it does not hurt her at all. Also that crusty stuff has been there since we got her almost 3 years ago. so I'm not sure if it's just fluke that the lump grew right under it or if it has something to do with the growth

She is a 7 year old quarter horse if that helps.

It looks like a sarcoid that's been sitting there all quiet for a while and something has sent it into a growth spurt. I'd get your vet to look at it.

Yup, you need the vet out to that - will you report back on what it is ? Very interested.

Yes I will fill you in on what the vet says.
It doesn't seem to be growing anymore. Our vet comes in April to do shots do you think I could leave it till then or is it urgent to get it looked at now? I only ask as we don't have a lot of money to put towards vet bills so if I can safely wait till the vet is already scheduled then that would allow us more to spend on actual treatment.
Thanks for all your help so far!

Looks like a sarcoid to me. It might now stay as it is or it may continue growing. Treatment can be pretty expensive - depending on what you use - but whether it's necessary at this point is something you need to talk to your vet about. Could you give them a ring and maybe send them the photo? I know my vets are always happy to have a chat about something over the phone, but I suppose others might not be - it's worth asking though!

You are fortunate that it is in a place where it isn't going to cause immediate problems. I'd give the vet a phone call and talk to him. If it stays the same size you'll probably be okay for a while, but if it keeps growing then it will need dealing with asap.

I would agree with others it looks like a sarcoid, they can grow very quickly, my young horse had a apple pip size lump in the girth area just behind his front leg that grew to a golf ball in 6 weeks. It was entirely under the skin so my vet banded it and it came off no problem although he does have a big scar there now it hasnt to date grown back and this was a couple of years ago. If it is suitable for banding this is generally a cheaper way of dealing with some sarcoids.

That needs seeing and dealing with before the flys start .
It will take a considerable time to heal so the sooner the better .
