i got my first horse about a year ago. he is a 14.2hh cob X but not chucky at all(the only thing that gives him away is his hair) he has been having two small scoops of mollasses chaff and cool mix, oil and garlic.

When i first got him he was very lazy, diddnt work nicely and was only being ridden twice a week. since i have had him, he has been ridden every day for 30 - 45 mins and breifly did dressage with him. I now jump him just over a metre and compete him regularly.

When we takehim to any open space he is very nappy and rears to try and go home, although we have made a slight breakthrough.

I am starting to doubt what i am feeding him, can anyone sugest anything xx

There could be a number of things makig him napp. I do find however that Molasses has too hight a sugar content for my horse. So now I do not feed anything with molasses in as all. She was also prone to tying up so need to watch her proteen/Carb levels also. As i competed most weekends I found a Hi Fiber chaff, Calm and Condition and some general cool mix worked quite well. Change one thing at a time so you can see any changes and you can pinpoint what may have been the cause if it was his feed.

I would cut out the cool mix and swap it for fibre cubes. I would suspect that your horse was unfit when you got him hence his laziness but now is feeling good and fit and although probably needs something because he is working daily doesn't need the mix. My cob is just being fed Happy hoof as it provides all the vitamins and minerals he needs. My sports horse mare is on Happy hoof, speedibeet which is unmollassed and fibre cubes. She was poor when she came to me a couple of weeks ago and is already starting to pick up and has a nice healthy shine to her coat already. If you notice her diet is entirely fibre based. Most horses really don't need to have all these concentrates in their diet at all.

No, it should not make him crazy, and definitely less crazy than molassed chaff.
I would swap your chaff to unmolassed, the cool mix to high fibre nuts and possibly add some speedibeet/kwikbeet if he needs condition or for better taste:)

i feed 2 of mine on winergy low which is a high fiber & oil diet, they have a better outlook on working, calmer and look great and they have only been on it a month,i just put sugarbeet with it but soon will feed it on its own just dampend down,my other 2 are on happy hoof, pony nuts and sugarbeet,my rising 3 is on the winergy growth only because she dropped weight over the winter then she will be getting the low in the next month, wished i used it before ,i dont like mixes too much starch in them,i have def seen a change in my horses that are on it,one has sarcoids and he is looking healther.
