My mare has a strange circular bald patch on her side, it seems itchy and scabby and was bleeding a little (where she'd scratched it)?

Im not sure, i was trying to upload a pic but i dont have a photo account thing.

I hadnt really noticed till i was grooming her.

How do i get rid of it?

Im worried that if i treat with atheletes foot cream, i will miss some areas, i couldnt see any other patches, (i went back to yard to look) but she is incredibly hairy at the moment still...what if i only treat one patch and miss one another?

Should add its not on any part tack comes into contact with....

Does sound like ringworm, how big is the patch? I would give her a very thorough check over to see if there are any others, also check any other horses she has contact with.

In my opinion people worry far too much about ringworm.....it is very easily treated.(we see it every day with our cattle)
Just keep treating any patches you see either with athletes foot cream,or canasten cream.

If it is ringworm, I agree with hm, don't worry too much. Iodine, athlete's foot cream and don't share rugs/grooming kit. I'm not sure it's as contagious as people think. I had a horse come to us with ringworm, turned her out with the others (don't mind if they get it too, just means they are less likely to get it in the future ;)) and nobody else got it. It will clear up :)

My boy has similar and thought it may be the beginnings of a sarcoid - all bubbly, red and scabby - kept picking the scab then one day it vanished - he was grooming it a lot. Have a bald patch now and surface just bit uneven - vet looked at it the other day and thinks it may be a sarcoid but gone now.

Not sharing grooming kit and other equipment (e.g. numnahs etc) is the main thing, make sure none of the other horses on the yard catch it. It's no life-threatening, but boy is it a pain in the bum! It can also live on surfaces like fences, walls and gateposts for years, so when you've got rid of it, that might be a good time to give your stable a really good spring clean, try and stop it coming back:)

I did'nt know that they are less likely to get it again, are you sure about that?

Aha

"Horses will develop immunity, but only to the particular strain they have encountered, and although they usually heal in the end, this is not always ideal."

They probably won't get that particular strain again, from good ol' H&H herself :D So they might well get it again, but like us and a cold, they won't get the same strain twice (or are very unlikely to)

She appears to have a bald patch on the top of her bum as well, doesnt look like ring worm, just looks a bit bald (some hair still left) and very dry...we have noticed another mare getting carried away with grooming the others so wondering if its that.....

It may not be ringworm. We have a couple of ponies that get really itchy with a coat change, and will rub and rub until they get bald patches.

Thankyou JandC for conferming that. :)
