Help....what saddle for a little man? been looking allday!(also in CR)

Well as my last post said i accidentally bought a shetland yesterday,( Danny the pony ) i have spent most of the day looking on the interweb for a saddle and seen loads. from £20 to £600!!! (GULP)

I havent had a shetland since i was 3 not sure what is good to use, I'm sure whan not BE, BSJA, BD ing you've had a go on a little one or your littler ones have, whats a good bet for a saddle.

Dex is 18mths (my son) so it is for a teeny tot but also a 3 yo 6year old will be riding regularly and if he;s naughtly a little 13 year old will have to have a go. help this is harder than finding one for a v strange shaped TB!!

My friend has three Shetlands. They all have Thorowgood Maxims extra wide. Could be worth a look.

is that the 15" one?? i've looked at saddles all day with no idea if they'll fit a shetland shape!

I use a Safari cub on a flat backed mini pony and also a mini donkey. Probably a bit small for your 6 yo, but great for the 3 yo. Adjustable pads so easy to get to sit on the pony and very secure for the child.

I used a TB racing saddle on my old shetland it had a flexible leather handle fitted by our saddler and lasted him 32yrs with no problems, also everyone fron 2yrs to 20yrs rode in it. he even showed in it.
Hope this gives anouther option.

Cub saddle. Only things short enough for most shetlands. 15" saddles are usually far too long for most shetlands. And unlike many of the kids saddles about, it's flexible width (i.e treeless). The wintec kids, the kincades and the shires bambino's all have a fixed shape head (tree) and therefore do have a 'width', even if marketed as one-size-fits-all.

A 12" cub saddle would do all the kids - if they're small enough to ride a shetland they'll fit into a cub saddle. My adult friend (5'2) rides her welsh A in a cub as nothing else is short enough. They're secure with a handle, lightweight, flexible (no worries about weight gain etc) and cheap. The panels can be moved about for a better fit and, with a prolite pads or similar underneather, comfortable for the pony.

Safari cub, anything longer is likely to be too long, and, as already mentoned, has easy-to-reposition pads that allow it to fit any width comfortably.
