hey guys

so the last few times i have ridden my horse he has been fine in walk and trot but extremely reluctant to canter- head in the air and running.

when i took him in the school it almost felt as if i was riding two horses (his back end wasnt engaged with his front )and he rufused to canter.

when i cantered out he was just bucking and not going foward. yesterday i was picking his feet out and when i had his front foot up he rested the diagonal back foot.

also yesterday i put pressure on his belly up right near his flanks but underneath and he went to kick me, this is completly out of charactor for him.

he doesnt seem to be in any pain in walk and trot and he is happy in himself. i am not going to ride him and the farrier is coming wednesday, and then i think i need to get the vet out.

personally i think it is something to do with his hips ? but not sure anyones suggestions welcome.

thankyou xx

p.s i dont think it is his saddle because he doesnt mind you putting pressure on his back although hes not keen on you doing his girth up ??

My horse went like this at the start of the year, the canter feels like a 4 beat and not 3? We also had alot of bucking. His was foot/leg pain on front legs as we were trying wedged shoes for his nav, it clearly didnt work so once they came off he was normal. Probably doesnt help you much sorry :o

I would do the usual saddle and back checks. My own was a minor muscle cramp in his hind quarters. Cantered fine after that. He too was fine in walk and trot

Definately check saddle fit first - Put on with no numnah/saddle blanket and walk, Trot and canter. Then take off and check underside for grease spots in gullet. One of mine used to b e like this - only in canter if he had lost a little weight, basically as he rounded his back in canter the gullet directly under the rider came into contact with his back. One of the problems of deep seat saddles.

If there is nothing to see then suggest having a chiropractor to check him out. They do some amazing dumb things in the field

Teeth check. I thought that my horse was wrong in his mouth and he had a small rub behind the withers on the near side when the saddle came off.
Tooth man confirmed a bone spur just starting to erupt in the lower jaw on the near side, this had caused a twist in the cranial axis to the right, which caused a twist behind the withers to the left so here we are 3 weeks on horse going bare foot and the back woman out again in a fortnight followed by bare foot trimmer followed by a visit to Cotts Farm to sort out bone spur.
