Hi

Bunny had her first puppy 10 minutes ago but the she has not expelled the placenta yet. Should we be worried. Puppy seems fine - trying to suckle and quite strong but her contractions have stopped.

Got everything we need. The umbilical cord is stretching out from her bum and placenta is still inside.

Don't want to cut the cord whilst the placenta is still inside.

Ok placenta is out. Bunny is completely uninterested in the puppy and is just lying there looking very sad. Oooh this is scary. I know all about kittens but puppies is a new one on me.

That's not normal behaviour, is she licking the pup? Did she not even attempt to chew the cord?

Is the pup on the back teats? They always have more milk...

Are you sure she didn't eat it as she cleaned up the pup, sometimes they can be very quick, you think she is cleaning a pup or cleaning herself but she has ate it as it appeared (sounds gory I know!) It could be because she is tired and getting her breath back but then again, she might have decided to shut up shop. I would give her a bit of space but keeping any eye out; she might like a small warm drop of tea with sugar or glucose in (I know it's not popular with some breeders but my dogs love a drop of tea then!) as it's hard work having puppies especially when you're not much more than a puppy yourself. Only give her a half saucerful though, no more at any one time. She might not have another pup for an hour or possibly within five minutes of the first, you can never tell for each litter so you just have to keep watching and have the towels handy to dry any off if she suddenly has another very quickly; whatever, don't let the pups get cold.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Ok relaxing a bit now. She is beginning to show signs of interest in the pup and seems to be having more contractions.

It's always a panic when you have not done this before. Puppy seems very strong!!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

To be honest her teats and bag don't look very full...

Have you seen any milk?

What a bonny pup, can not add anymore to what S & P have said! Keep calm & breath!

No - I haven't seen any milk and that does worry me. However, I will stay calm for now - panic is just a breath away - and generally these things turn out ok. Her rear boobs are huge - they were hanging down almost to the floor and swaying when she moved.

Ok - Puppy number 2 out now - and it's huge. It has the biggest head compared to puppy number 1.

Still a bit worried about milk - puppy number 1 doesn't seem to have fed yet although it did suckle when it first came out. They are so strong.

I have not done dogs birthing, but have you tried giving the teats a little squeeze? Sometimes (I'm talking farm animals here though but think its the same) they dont let down the milk.
Any concerns I don't think the vets would mind a quick ring to confirm anything.
Good luck, puppy 1 looks lovely!
(and will add the keep calm and breath

Hi

She had three in the end. She seems fine. She wouldn't settle anywhere - she wanted to have them on my bed. In the end we put the box on my bed and I let her have my furry blanket (it will wash won't it?).

So I slept with the other half of my bed taken up by a birthing box.

They are a squeaky little lot!!

Hopefully her milk has come in now. If you haven't done so I would recommend you ask your vet to give her a check over, jsut to make sure she has finished and no placenta retained. . Good luck with the babes, what sexes are they?

But where else was she supposed to have them?! They always pick the best spots and yes, it will wash out, just give it a couple of washes and use lots of Comfort!

Well done, really pleased for you; you coped very well.

I second the vet visit, they could also do the dewclaws then too and the pups won't even notice, they'll just snuggle up to Mum and suckle again.

Lots of pic's please when you've recovered!
