Does anyone have any advice on which type of bit I should use? I currently ride in a loose ring snaffle, but I have recently found that I have NO brakes and very little steering when my mare gets excited and takes off (mainly if out with other horses). She is very strong and puts her head down. I have never changed her bit before so any advice would be great.

I highly recommend Mylers, Toto used to be in a Cheltenham gag for Pony Club but is now in a myler snaffle and going better than ever!

I personally do not like the Myler bits. I would recommend a happy mouth or vulcanite pelham - I used this on my old boy Mickey who could take a hell of a hold when he wanted to, and it was great!

I have a 5" happy mouth I'm considering putting on ebay if you are interested...

I would go for either a pelham/dutch gag, and ride with two reins with either bit. Aother option could be a hanging cheek if your horse is likely to be sensitive to a change.

I would try a dutch gag thats what ive just put mine in as she can take off ok in walk and trot when you canter you stand no chance
If this no good then i would look at something more harder
