For a nf rising 5yr old?

Pony does not appear all that happy in current lose ring french link. Dosnt do anything much but plays with it a fair bit and i just get the feeling the bit isnt working for her.

Now with all the new wonderfull bits you can get now im sure there must be something better out there for her? Unfortunatly i dont know what that might be.

We did try a happy mouth straight bar a while back, which wasnt really any better, had to stop using it as she chewed it and made it sharp!

So can you let me know what you think might be better? Was planning on getting something on trial from the bit bank to test drive, just not sure what? Oh and she has a soft mouth so something mild and suitable for dressage.

Thanks

Have you had his teeth looked at? I also echo what native eventer says about wolf teeth.

If he plays with the bit a lot I would definitely recommend a straight bar mouthpiece. Going for a stronger bit won't make any difference so what about a straight bar vulcanite snaffle? Another option could be to try a single jointed snaffle, which will allow him to play with the bit a little but not as much as with a french link snaffle.

My pb NF (rising 7) seems to prefer a bit which moves less in his mouth - have gone from loose ring french to hanging french to cambridge 'magic' - currently trialling myler mullen mouth bit with independent side movement.
I agree get teeth sorted first - mine had had wolf teeth out but the roots remained and started causing problems. He's now more comfortable with them out too.
Good luck - there are too many bits to choose from!
