Hey i have a 14.2hh horse who is a brilliant jumper. But he just gets a bit keen. Any tips on how to keep him controled are welcome.

i had the same problem with my old pony as he went way too quick to and my instructer used to tell me to trot to the jump and just do a couple of strides of canter and that would teach him to slow down also dont give him a long run up to the fence. you could also try circling him when he goes too fast.

Thanks for the advice, ill take that into practice 2morrow

ditto the gridwork suggestion! lots of poles will make him think and slow down and if he doesn't he'll clobber his legs so should learn quickly!

I would have thought that asking for canter a couple of strides away from the jump would encourage him to speed not slow down?

Me too..... My big lad rushes and my instructor said to put a pole a good distance from the jump then practice getting as many strides between the pole and jump as you can so if the first time you do it you get 5 strides then the second time try for 6 and so on you can do this in trot and canter but it stops you thinking of the jump and helps you to wait for the jump to come to you instead of riding to the jump.
