Hi all,
I've decided to take on a bichon frise dog which my sis in law's parents are rehoming. They just haven't got time for it and are happy for us to have him. I got a little bichon pup last year who sadly passed away at 4mths old due to a heart defect so it just feels like the right dog to rehome :)

I went to see him yesterday, he's a lovely affectionate little thing but seems to have a bad habit of wrapping himself round yer leg if you get my drift...!

He's not difficult to shake off but obviously I don't really want it to continue. Any advice on how to stop it?

He's 1.5yr old, neutered as well.

Good for you for taking him on :D I'm sure you can stop the humping. When was he neutered? If recently, maybe there are still hormones racing about. If it was when he was a pup, you could take him to the vets for the blood test to check whether the neutering was completely successful. I bet it's just a habit though, if it was mine I'd be distracting the dog every time it went to do it - maybe by clapping the hands or shaking a bottle of pebbles and then throwing a ball/ toy etc to show him the right sort of attention!

flodden humped a few times as a 5 month old pup, he got told off for it. and when he ignored that his bottom got a smack. He learned immediately that it was not acceptable and stopped doing it and he is entire and 1 year old and has never ever humped since. My friends just ignored their JR when he did it and as a result he humps everything. He needs to know it is unacceptable. Distraction may work. but I find a short sharp shock works better, is all over in seconds and creates a lasting memory. There is nothing more embarassing than being humped by someones oversexed dog.

Thanks for the advice, I was guessing it was just a case of telling him off! I will find out when he was neutured, I'm not exactly sure. I know his current owners have been quite lax with him, so hopefully it's just a behaviour that needs corrected! (Immediately!)

Bear was on a lead and told very firmly no and taken away from whatever he tried to hump (male GSD puppy and every female puppy at training!) I distracted with liver cake, cocaine for dogs. :) He's more into food than humping. Weirdo! :D

Ive only had one humper and I found distraction worked the best, its a horrible habit whether on humans or dogs and my biggest fear was that one day he was going to do it to the wrong dog and get a severe reprimand.
