I know this is probably a really stupid question but I have no experiance of FEI passports so wanted to check.
Nicky has one but it has just expired... do I need to get it renewed now or can I wait until he needs one again to have it renewed? I suppose what I really need to know is if I don't sort it out does it mean he doesn't have a current passport?

do you need an FEI passport for a CIC* or CCI*?

sorry no help at all

Yes you need to send it to the passport issuing authority to get it validated again.

It means that he does not have a current validated passport, if you take him anywhere and the passport is checked and it is out of date, you are liable for a fine from the FEI.

Hes competing at Novice eventing and going to go 1* next year. I suppose I should just get it renewed, but didnt want to have to spend money if I didn't have to!

If you keep the 2 passports together, as you are supposed to, when they check the vaccinations, description and do the endorsement, they will use the FEI passport, as it over rules your national one and then if it is not valid, you will be fined.

For eventing you need to be FEI registered (horse and jockey) for any CIC/CCI but you do not need an FEI passport for CIC*/CCI*/CIC** ie. the first time you need an FEI passport is CCI**.

This is a very good thing as registration is very cheap (~£30 ish for both) but a FEI passport is not (can't remember but approx £150!!!).

Just to back Gamebird up because it IS confusing: in eventing, you do NOT need an FEI passport for CIC/CCI* at home (you DO need it if travelling to any event abroad). You DO need to be registered with FEI. Over here you do this through BE, its easy and quick, presumably in Ireland you do it through EI. Good luck

I've come up against this issue myself as two of my horses have FEI passports that have expired. I spoke to DEFRA and the BEF and the definitive answer is that even if the FEI passport has expired it is STILL a legal passport for the purposes of the DEFRA regulations in this country. You do not need to get it renewed by the FEI (done by the BEF in this country) unless you want to compete under FEI rules. It costs £165 to renew it so not worth doing unless you are going to compete in an FEI competition. Even expired under FEI rules it is still valid as a bog standard passport for the life of the horse.

Incidentally FEI horses need vaccinating every six months rather than every twelve months so FEI passports work out very expensive to maintain!
