Okay I can do most things on my own but holding him while I clamber on for the first time I can't do !

So have no money to send him off to be "professionally " backed. So I need a lightweight, quiet but capeable rider to be the weight while I do the reassuring and leading him bit.

I am enjoying him so far and yes he doesn't do other people touching his ears but that is an issue I am dealing with - just need a few more willing volunteers! But he is improving!

So how do I find myself a jockey. He is only 13.2hh so I need a light adult but they must be able to sit well and be balanced.

Am I out of my depth and should I leave it and save up and if so - how much would it cost and how do I find a good yard?

Also once backed and understanding commands do you have to ride everyday to get the information to sink in or can you pick up and put down as time permits? I can't commit to working him everyday as I have too many other commitments. Also at what stage are they considered reliable enough to pop a child on board?

This is keeping me awake at night. As I have been told to sell him as backing is dangerous and too much trouble and to sell my foal and just keep Mum and a old pony. But I wanted to keep Mum and foal but again have been warned foal will not wean pnroperly and be clingy to Mum and a total pain. Any experiences appreciated. I read lots of books but wonder how things work in reality.

I have just backed my 16.2 3 yr old and i ride her every other day. seems to work as it is not too much ie; every day but enough so that the repetitiveness of it means they get used to coming in being ridden and having stuff done and someone getting on them, hacking out on their own etc.

LOL - I just did what I was told!! :D

Seriously though, Beatrice5's little pony is very polite and a pleasure to do. I just can't wait until your children start pony club on him :D
