Hi Everyone.

I am looking for peoples opinions about bits for my youngster.
My boy is a Sec D (rising 3) approx 15hh.

What bit would you reccommend? I want to use something as kind and soft on his mouth as possible. He has really fleshy lips so I worry a loose ring will pinch his skin. He also has quite a fat tongue.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks xxxxx :)

My 4 year old chewed his happy mouth to pieces and was at the age where he was begining to learn to carry an outline so we chose the Neue Schule Starter Bit, although expensive at £40 it has worked a dream, his lovely soft mouth has stayed that way, it doesn't rub or pinch, it is shaped well for the tongue to move about (he would rear with bits that pressed down) and has a central lozenge to get him to play. Its not too thick so has good brakes which we lack everywhere * rolls eyes* and its coated in Salox which helps salivation. I pop it in the dishwasher every now and then, comes out sparkling but all coating still there, a very good investment for young horses whether dressage or jumping or even hunting!!

when first bitting mine i use a full cheek waterford snaffle, the mouthpiece is made up of a series of rounded links, that is similar to a chain and can be manipulated by the horse allowing him to swallow and move his mouth freely. also the cheek pieces stop the bit being pulled through the mouth if they bull back and panic

...Im about to try the Hippus 510L on my youngster, he was bitted in a KK Sprenger Augrian with no problems, but its a loose ring & like many I worry about it pulling through or pinching (plus hate the look of rubber bit guards)
