Hi there guys, I have been having some problems lately with my TB mare, she has been tossing her head awfully lot for the past couple of weeks, she opens her mouth during riding and sometimes she even tries to avoid the bit with her tongue. She has recently been checked by the dentist, so perhaps it was not her teeth. I was using the Verbindend Neue Schule bit, and she was quite happy at the beginning. But now I suspect it may be pinching her, so you think I should try a D-ring or an Eggbutt? or a full cheek? Would also switching to a Hanoverian bridle be a good idea, so that the double noseband prevents her from opening her mouth a lot? Do you suspect anything else that could be causing this? Please recommend any good double jointed bits that you are using and are pleased with... Thanks a lot...

No expert but pherhaps she does not like the jointed mouthpiece? my mare hates them and after trying french links, couple of lozenge types, some odd ball revolver- i put her in a mullen mouth and she was so much happier. She is quite strong though so is now in a kimberwick but stopped fussing with her head and getting tongue over in a mullen mouth. Just my own experience but hope you find something suitable :)

If you suspect that she is uncomfortable with the bit she is in, it would be unkind at best, to get her a noseband which prevents her from opening her mouth. It could also be asking for trouble as she may tell you she is uncomfortable in a more forceful way.
I think you need to try a few different bits to see which she is most comfortable in - a mullen-mouthed one may be the way to go. Or, would it be worth adjusting the cheek-pieces to raise or lower the bit in her mouth, if it is rubbing her?

Thanks a lot for your replies.... I don't think she has pollen allergy as there are no symptoms like trouble in breathing, coughing etc. I think I will just try different bits. I could try the mullen mouth, but the problem is she is quite strong so would mean imply a loss of control? I was actually thinking of trying a doulbe jointed eggbutt or d-ring , just to see if the previous one was pinching her. I was thinking of trying the Neue Schule Tranz Angled Lozenged Eggbutt Snaffle 16mm, any ideas on this one?

Thanks
