Hi all,

A few suggestions please on bits.

My new boy a 16.1hh IDXTB is a little fussy in his mouth and backs off many metal bits. I have found that he is happiest and goes well in a happy mouth, loose ring, french link in the school.

However, I have a few brake problems when cantering out on hacks. He does not tank off with me, or anything like that, but I need to keep a really good hold on him and start bringing him back to me much earlier than I would really like to really enjoy our canters. He is perfect in every other respect out on hacks.

I know from photos I have from his previous life that his owner used a pelham when going cross country but do not really want to go this far.

Does anyone have any suggestions in the happy mouth range. I don't have much experience other than snaffles with all my previous horses so am at a loss as to where to go next. Hanging cheak, straight bar??

All suggestions gratefully received.

my mare hates metal bits and i too had braking problems - have her in a rubber pelham but with a leather curb instead of a metal curb and she loves it - they are not a bad thing its better to have good brakes that they listen to than have a bit that they ignore - im sure mine had abruised mouth in a snaffle where i was constantly pulling on her - whereas now i dont need to pull at all she must be happier .

Hi my horse is an ex polo pony and they are usually ridden in a pelham or a gag, so when i got her a year ago she had a hard mouth and had problems with breaks, i tried so many bits i could open a shop. Untill i tried a Dr.cooks bitless bridle on a natural horsemanship web site and have never looked back its fab.
