Hiya, it's my first post on here and i'm looking for some advice :)

I recently brought a 7y/o (though only backed in feb) with the idea of training her up for mga, she was good as gold when tried, and so we purchased her. She came to the yard and we gave her a few days to settle in and get familiar, then yesterday i thought it was time she be exercised so I tacked her up and walked her round the school a bit before getting on. But as soon as i got on it was like her back dipped and she started freaking out, shooting forward etc, so i jumped off. I then lunged her for a while, thinking maybe she's just cold backed, so then i had another rider (lighter than me) get on just to sit on her, and she was fine. But as soon as she put her feet in the stirrups she started going crazy, broncing like mad around the school, till she stopped for a second and the rider got off. Why did she do that?

When we brought her both the owner and rider said she's never bucked, bronced, reared etc and she's always been good as gold. So now i'm unsure whether that's true or not. I've been sent videos of her jumping at a show and going pony racing and all sorts and I'm confused how she managed all that when i can't even get on her. She seems like a sweet pony on the ground, though very nervy and head shy, but i figured that's lack of experience/handling.

She didn't come with a saddle so we used an old one which i thought fit not too bad, but could broncing be a pain response? I don't know if it's something to do with her back or her teeth, or she's just inexperienced and needs lots more work than first expected.

Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you

I would guess it was too little then too much. perhaps a greenbroke pony could have done with a bit of a slower take up from you. but again saddle fit and pain are the first to eliminate at 7 have her teeth been done

On a pony who was only just backed in February?? A few cross poles perhaps, but " pony racing and all sorts" sound worrying.
I would get a saddle properly fitted and start again, very slowly and carefully with plenty of ground work as well along with other previous suggestions.

Back checked by a vet or bodyworker, preferably one that works with a rehab specialist as it's likely she could do with some in hand work, she'll have been hooning around under saddle and not building rider-carrying muscle. THEN saddle fitter.

Get a correctly fitted saddle before you try riding again in the meantime do some basic ground work lunging and long reining, then take a few steps back and treat her like a newly backed and take it slowly.

If she is still resistant to a rider I would get a proper vet check in case she has something physical going on.

I feel that her being backed late could have been the fact she may have been started before and it went wrong, so I would do some digging and try and find out a bit more about what happened.

As she's a she it is possible she has had a foal or 3 so wouldn't be backed until later. My guess as it can only be a guess is too quickly razzed about and now needs a work up and a new saddle
